Mason Roberts, Trinity University, Men's Basketball - Character & Community

MASON ROBERTS OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior forward on the men's basketball team from Kerville, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 31.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Most recently, Roberts has taken advantage of volunteering opportunities offered through Trinity's sport management department including an impactful experience on the volunteer staff for the 2021 NCAA I Women's Basketball National Championship, which was hosted exclusively in central and south Texas, with the final three rounds all played at the Alamodome in downtown San Antonio.

"I was a court facilitator for their practices," Roberts says, "...it was really eye-opening to see how many people and how much resources and effort and planning goes into pulling off an event."

The Tivy High School graduate has also made the Kerrville Triathlon Festival a staple in his community outreach over the years, an event that holds added value for the Kerrville-native.

"It just felt like I was taking part in something that felt like more of a tradition year after year that started when I was in middle school," Roberts reflects. "Seeing my own family run in it, and participate, was a really enriching experience."

The senior business management major has had the belief of giving back and being present in his community his entire life.

"Servant leadership is something that has always come to my forefront and emphasized at all points in my life," Roberts points out. "Being a student-athlete, it's been a struggle to balance the academic rigor of any school on top of what's required to be an athlete but, through my time here in the four years I've been at Trinity, I've been able to find some windows and opportunities to give back to the community, whether that's at home in Kerrville or here in San Antonio."

"Mason is a true leader on our team," Head Men's Basketball Coach Jimmy Smith says of Roberts. "He spends intentional time building relationships with each member of the team, shows up every day with great attitude and genuinely puts our team goals first."

On top of his work in the greater San Antonio and Kerrville communities, Mason takes his approach back to his team as a part of Trinity's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in representation of the men's basketball program.

"In regards to SAAC he brings the same mindset and drive that he does to our program," Smith continues. "Mason works hard to do what is best for our student-athletes, athletics department and the University as a whole."
