Coach Scannell was also the D3baseball.com Region 10 Coach of the Year, which was announced just before the team began its part in the NCAA III College World Series. He was also the ABCA and D3baseball.com West Region Coach of the Year in both 2015 and 2016, earning National Coach of the Year honors from both organizations – as well as HERO Sports and the National College Baseball Hall of Fame – after leading Trinity to the NCAA III National Championship in 2016.

This season, Coach Scannell led Trinity to its 14th appearance in the NCAA Playoffs and the program's third trip to the NCAA III College World Series. The Tigers finished the season with a 38-13 overall record, winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship with a 19-2 conference mark.

The Tigers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and promptly won three out of four games against the University of Texas-Dallas in the NCAA Regionals round. Trinity then swept third-ranked Birmingham-Southern College in the NCAA Super Regionals to advance to the final site in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Coach Scannell has compiled an impressive 775 victories and a winning percentage of .728 in his 24 seasons as the Tiger head coach, which are both Trinity records. The team's 38 victories this season are the fourth-most in school history.
