LUKE FENDER OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a first-year swimming from Jackson, Miss., has been selected the SCAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week for performances during the meets swam Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 10. SCAC Swimming & Diving Release (Week 5)
Fender had a remarkable weekend at the 2024 Division III Shootout as the first-year swimmer knocked over ten seconds off his lifetime best in the 500 freestyle, demolishing the Trinity school record, the D3 Shootout record, and taking down the SCAC open mark with a 4:29.96.
Fender also posted the third fastest time of the meet in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.16. before leading off the 800 freestyle relay in 1:39.82. In addition, he also posted a 47.54 in the individual 100 freestyle, and split 46.90 on the mixed 4x100 freestyle relay.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Junior Montgomery Cortez of McMurry won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.81 and the 1000 freestyle in 11:23.88 on Saturday in a dual against University of the Ozarks. He also won the 500 freestyle in 5:12.37 (lifetime best) and the 100 freestyle in 51.92 on Friday. First-year Benjamin Tercero of St. Thomas posted a first-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly, with a swift 24.53 in the team's dual against Trinity. Tercero also demonstrated his consistency in the 100-yard IM, where he placed second with a time of 58.37. The first-year swimmer also played a pivotal role in the mixed relay by helping the team secure third place with a time of 4:12.21. Senior Jack Hussin of Colorado College won the 100 free with a in-season best time of 48.40 and was second in the 200 free with another in-season best time 1:46.74 in the team's dual against Colorado School of Mines. Hussin also contributed to a second place finish leading off the 400 free relay. Senior Ethan Spillers of University of the Ozarks won the 200 fly in 2:10.25, the 100 fly in 57.30, and placed second in the 500 free in 5:27.08 in a pair of duals against McMurry over the weekend.
