FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - No. 8 Trinity University Men's Tennis opened its run in the 2022 NCAA III National Championship tournament in the second round of the University of Mary Washington Regional Saturday with a shutout victory, 5-0, over St. Mary's College (MD).
The Tigers (15-6) ceded just one game in doubles play, then posted back-to-back straight sets shutouts to drop the rackets in swift fashion.
Junior Hao Nguyen was the first shutout victor from the second line of singles action after he and senior Christian Settles improved to 11 straight victories and clinched the doubles advantage on a shutout tally, 8-0.
First-year Eric Liao was responsible for the cease-fire with his straight-sets shutout from the fifth line, his third such victory this season, and second since the beginning of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament last month.
Senior Cameron Krimbill and junior Alessio Azzalini joined forces for the first doubles shutout from the third line. Krimbill took his usual line-one responsibilities in singles and had a 6-1 first-set win in hand when the rackets dropped.
Senior Wilson Hamilton and junior Cameron Goldstein finished off the doubles sweep, 8-1, from line two. The west's 12th-ranked duo has won their last four matches against NCAA III competition in the second line, two of which came in matches against nationally-ranked teams.
No. 8 Trinity Men's Tennis continues its run in the 2022 NCAA III National Championship Sunday at 11 a.m. ET against No. 13 Emory University (GA) on the campus of Mary Washington.
