ASHER NOFZIGER OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a junior forward from Denver, Colo., has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 6 through Sunday, January 12. SCAC Men's Basketball Release (Week 9)
Nofziger led the Tigers to a 2-1 week, including a 2-0 trip out to Texas in wins over Southwestern and Texas Lutheran. Nofziger averaged 20 points per game, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. He dished out 20+ point performances against UC Santa Cruz on Monday and Southwestern on Friday. On Sunday, he led the Tigers in scoring in part of CC’s greatest margin in victory (97-56) in 21 years.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Jackson Rennie of Austin College had a big performance in his lone game of the week, pouring in 25 points while shooting 60 percent from the field and knocking down 5-of-9 three pointers at Ozarks. Rennie added seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the game. Junior guard Quentin Beverly of Centenary continued his torrid offensive output this past week for the Gents as he averaged 28.5 PPG in two home games. He scored a career-high 32 points last Tuesday against LeTourneau and followed that with a game-high 25 points in a 92-65 win over Dallas on Sunday. He averaged 34.5 minutes per game and was 18-35 from the floor (51.4 %) for the week, 11-21 (52.4 %) from beyond the arc, and 10-11 from the FT line for 90.9 % with four rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Beverly has now reached double figures five times this season and scored 25+ points three times. Junior guard Joey Ramirez of Concordia put on a dominant, three-game performance last week as he averaged 24.7 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He tallied 17 points (7-13 fg) against Howard Payne. In the Tornados' conference opener, Ramirez earned new career-highs with 32 points and 19 rebounds at Schreiner. Two days later, he recorded another double-double with 25 points & 15 rebounds at Trinity. Overall, Ramirez was efficient with 54.7/44.4/100.0 splits as he posted team-highs in points and rebounds in all three games. Senior guard Eric Gooden of Ozarks had another strong game to help the Eagles secure a win against Austin College while helping the team to one of its best starts in program history. Gooden scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds while hitting all four of his free throw attempts against Austin. He had three steals and three assists to go along with his consistent shooting night. Behind Gooden's play, the Eagles (10-2) are off to their best start since the 1997-98 season. Sophomore guard CK Egbo of St. Thomas made a significant impact in his lone appearance last week, showcasing remarkable efficiency and scoring ability in just 16 minutes of play. Coming off the bench, Egbo tallied 18 points, shooting an impressive 66.7 percent from the field, including a scorching 75.0 percent from beyond the arc (6-for-8) in the Celts 64-43 victory at Southwestern. He also added four rebounds and an assist while committing no turnovers. Senior guard Xavier Phillips of Texas Lutheran led the Bulldogs in scoring in both contests last week, averaging 15 points on 50 percent shooting, eclipsing 1,000 career points in the loss against St. Thomas. Phillips also added 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game last week. Senior guard Jacob Harvey of Trinity led the Tigers to three victories in SCAC play, defeating Schreiner on Monday and then taking down both McMurry and Concordia over the weekend to claim the top spot in the Gold Division standings. Harvey averaged 13.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 2.3 assists over the three-game stretch, capped by a 17-point effort on Sunday against Concordia. He hit a three-pointer in the final two minutes of that game to put the Tigers up 82-76 and stop a furious comeback by by the Tornados. Harvey then put the game out of reach with two free throws in the final seconds, capping an 8-for-8 performance at the line. The three-pointer he hit to help seal Sunday's win also happened to be a record-breaking basket for Harvey. With that shot, he became Trinity's career leader in three-point field goals made with the 228th of his career. He passed Robert Kitzinger (2010-14) on Trinity's all-time list, which also puts Harvey in the top 12 in SCAC history entering the season.
