NEW ORLEANS, La. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its men’s and women's team and individual academic awards last Thursday.
Colorado College, University of Dallas and Trinity University had both their men’s and women’s programs receive recognition for the third-consecutive year.
The Colorado College men, led by Alex Nichols, posted the highest GPA among conference male squads at 3.768 to garner All-Academic honors. That ranked third among the 189 teams in Division III to receive recognition. University of Dallas, coached by Nick Schneigert, posted a 3.66 GPA this season, and Trinity University, led by head coach Emily Daum, tallied a 3.391 team GPA in also earning All-Academic recognition.
For a team to be considered for this honor, it must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional meet and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10 on a 4.0 scale. Overall, there were 401 teams honored by the USTFCCCA, of which 212 were women’s teams and 189 were men’s teams.
Individually, juniors James Settles, a computer science major and Devlin Swanson, a biochemistry major, along with sophomore neuroscience major Brett Kitazono of Colorado College all earned USTFCCCA All-Academic team recognition.
On the women’s side, Colorado College, coached by Alex Nichols, led the way among all SCAC institutions receiving recognition with a team GPA of 3.819. That mark was tied for the 14th best among the 212 teams across Division III to receive academic accolades. Trinity University, led by head coach Emily Daum, posted a team GPA of 3.604 and the University of Dallas, guided by Nick Schneigert finished with a 3.23 GPA, as both squads were also honored by the USTFCCCA.
Individually, Colorado College placed six student-athletes on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, including senior Clare Quinn (political science), juniors Jane Mallach (political science) and Na’ama Nevo (mathematics), sophomores Elliot Singer (general studies) and Sydney Rankin (undeclared) and first-year Ella Fullerton (undeclared).
Rounding out the individual honorees from the SCAC to earn All-Academic recognition is senior neuroscience major Elaine Kaster of Trinity University.
To earn individual honors, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher and finish in the top 25 percent at their respective regional. There were 703 student-athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors with women accounting for 54 percent (383) and men accounting for 46 percent (320) of that total.
