Colorado College Women Earn Return Trip to SCAC Championship Game

SHERMAN, Texas -- After both teams failed to muster much first half offense, it was Colorado College who finally got things going in the second half, outscoring Texas Lutheran 35-15 in the third and fourth quarters to grind out a 55-40 victory and earn a trip to Sunday's championship game of the 2022 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Official Tournament Website | Photo Gallery | Awards Photos | Postgame Interview

Trailing 25-20 at the break, Colorado College outscored Texas Lutheran 19-6 in the third quarter and then held the Bulldogs without a field goal the final 7:08 of the game to pull away for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams struggled mightly to score the basketball the first two quarters. Texas Lutheran shot just 24.4 percent (10-41) from the field and CC was worse, hitting on just 18.5 percent (5-27) of its field goal attempts, including 1 of 11 from three-point range.
  • CC found its range in the third quarter, nailing 7 of 15 field goal attempts (46.7 percent). Conversely, the Tigers held TLU to just 1 of 12 (8.3 percent) and the Bulldogs never recovered.
  • After TLU's Jayla Santa Maria connected from behind the arc to pull the Bulldogs to within 45-40, CC answered with 10 unanswered points while keeping TLU scoreless during the final 7:08 of the game.
  • Colorado College outscored Texas Lutheran 18-10 in the paint and 9-2 on second change points.
  • In a battle of the top two rebounding teams in the league, CC outrebounded TLU 51-38.

NOTABLES
  • Junior guard Anna Fanelli continues her climb up the SCAC record book in career assists. The current single-season record holder with 234 after her seven Saturday night, she moved up four slots on the all-time list and currently sits in fifth with 439 career assists.
  • After having never advanced to the conference championship game in its previous 13 seasons in the conference, CC will play in its second consecutive SCAC title game on Sunday.
  • Colorado College has won nine straight games, the second-longest current win streak in the league trailing on Trinity's 23 straight.
  • Texas Lutheran ends its season with a 16-9 record. 
UP NEXT
Colorado College (16-11) advances to take on top-seeded Trinity in Sunday's championship game. This will be the second consecutive year the two have met for the conference title as Trinity defeated CC, 73-63, on its home floor to earn the 2021 championship.
