Ross continued his dominant start to the season, lifting the Mountaineers to a perfect 2-0 week with wins over Texas-Dallas and ETBU. He averaged 21.0 points on 56.5 percent shooting, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game. Against UTD, Ross recorded his fifth-straight double-double to open the season behind 20 points and 11 rebounds and secured the win for Schreiner hitting two clutch free throws, down one, with three second remaining in the contest. Ross also broke the SCAC career records for rebounds in that game and currently is just 33 rebounds away from becoming the first 1,000 career rebounder in SCAC history. Ross’ efforts have helped Schreiner post a 5-1 record to start the season, equaling the 2022-23 start, the best for the Mountaineers in the SCAC era (2013-14 – present).
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Jackson Rennie of Austin College was outstanding all weekend, hitting 9-of-18 three pointers while averaging 18.0 points-per-game as the 'Roos went 2-0 against Lyon and Hendrix. Rennie capped the weekend with a 27-point effort in a win against Hendrix, knocking down 7-of-12 from long range in the win. He added 2.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks-per-game and had only one turnover in 54 minutes played in the team's two games. Senior guard Jalen Ned of Centenary averaged 16.5 PPG in two games last week and matched his season high of 20 against Millsaps on Saturday. Ned played 33 minutes in each contest and totaled 10 rebounds and added two steals with four made three-point field goals for the week. He also went 11-of-13 at the free-throw line which included a perfect 10-10 effort against Millsaps. Senior guard Scott Ruegg of Colorado College made four three-pointers and poured in 14 points as the Tigers battled Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln over the weekend. He finished the game with 36 minutes, four rebounds, an assist and three steals. Junior guard Caleb Golden of Concordia lit up the scoreboard last week, leading the Tornados to a pair of road wins, defeating Hardin-Simmons and Southwestern Adventist. Golden averaged 22 points on a remarkable 85.7 percent shooting, highlighted by a 30-point effort, including a perfect 15-of-15 from the line in the won over HSU. He also added 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the wins. Senior forward Jack Boyle of Dallas was dynamite, nearly posting a triple-double in the Crusaders win over Hendrix last week. Boyle scored 11 points on 45.5 percent shooting and added 16 rebounds and dished out seven assists in the win. Senior forward TJ Hilliard of McMurry averaged 17.7 points on an outstanding 61.3 precent shooting in three games last week for the War Hawks. Hilliard also added 4.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Sophomore guard Cedrick Dodd of Ozarks led the Eagles to a perfect 3-0 week last week with wins over Lyon, Millsaps and Belhaven. Dodd poured in 18.0 points per game, behind 42.2 percent shooting and added 5.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals to help lift Ozarks to a 5-1 record through six games, its best start since the 2015-16 season. Sophomore forward Charles Gitonga of St. Thomas posted a pair of all around performances in leading the Celts to a 2-0 week last week with wins over Howard Payne and Wis.-Superior. Gitonga averaged 14.0 points behind 63.6 percent shooting and grabbed 7.5 rebounds, dished out 2.0 assists and swiped 0.5 steals per game in the two wins. Junior guard Mason Wallace of Texas Lutheran averaged 14.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game to lead the Bulldogs to a 1-2 week on a west coast non-conference road trip. Wallace scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in TLU’s 95-83 win over La Verne. Sophomore guard Christian Green of Trinity led the Tigers to an 84-76 win in their only action last week to improve to 3-0 to start the 2024-25 season. Green finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, hitting 9-of-11 from the field and 1-of-2 from three-point range during his 32 minutes on the floor. He had 16 points and six rebounds in the second half of play as Trinity rallied from a 41-35 halftime deficit to pick up its third win of the season.
