In the same balloting, Tobin Lonergan of Colorado College was named the conference’s Rookie-of-the-Year honors while CC head coach Susan Stuart was selected SCAC Coach-of-the-Year

Garcia, a senior attacker from Georgetown, Texas, led Southwestern and the SCAC in assists (30) and points (77) and finished second in goals scored with 47 behind her teammate Deanna Hames who had 49. Her assist total is the fifth-highest single season total in conference history and her 77 points represent the eight-most. She had the third-highest scoring game in conference history on March 12 when she had four goals and seven assists for 11 points against Northwestern-St. Paul. A two-time All-SCAC honoree and the league’s Offensive Player-of-the-Week in Weeks 3, 8 and 9, Garcia helped the Pirates lead the league in scoring this season (15.56 goals per game) and finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in almost every offensive category, including goals scored (122), assists (69) and points (191).

Garcia is the second Southwestern player to earn Attacker-of-the-Year honors, following Hayley Donnelly who earned the honor following the 2019 season.

Pertuit, a junior midfielder from Seabrook, Texas, led the Pirates and the conference in several defensive categories, including ground balls with 64 (fourth-highest single season total in SCAC history) and caused turnovers with 32. Her 83 draw controls led the team and ranked as the second-highest total in the league this year. The Defensive Player-of-the-Week in Weeks 6, 7 and 9, Pertuit, who was last season’s SCAC Midfielder-of-the-Year, was also a force on the offensive side of the field, scoring 31 goals and adding 13 assists for 44 points on the season. She had a team-high three goals and five draw controls in the Pirates’ loss to Colorado College in the SCAC championship game.

Pertuit is the second consecutive Southwestern women’s lacrosse player to earn SCAC Defender-of-the-Year honors, following current teammate Brooke Folliard who won the award following the 2021 season.

Ortman, a sophomore midfielder from Oakland, Calif., scored 20 goals (10th in the SCAC) and assisted on 19 more (fourth in the SCAC) to total 39 points – which was good for sixth in the conference. The second-year player led the conference in draw controls with 83 and was sixth in ground balls with 36. The 83 draw controls are the fourth-highest single season total in SCAC women’s lacrosse history. In last Sunday’s SCAC Championship match against Southwestern, Ortman finished the contest with six draw controls, four ground balls and a goal and helped hold the Pirates to less than half of their season average of 16.07 goals per game.

Ortman’s selection as Midfielder-of-the-Year represents the second time a CC player has taken home this postseason honor as Lauren Pejza received the accolade following the 2019 season.

CC’s Lonergan, a first-year attacker from Battleboro, Vt., led the Tigers in scoring this year with 41 goals (third in the SCAC) and 18 assists (fifth in the SCAC) for 59 points (third in the SCAC), numbers that also led all first-year players in the conference. Lonergan made her presence felt early in Colorado Springs, earning SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors in Week 2 when she recorded 10 goals and 11 points in her first two collegiate contests – both against teams that had qualified for the NCAA Tournament the previous year – to become the first Tiger since 2004 to score 10 or more goals in their first two matches. She was also the only conference player this season with multiple six goal games.

Lonergan’s selection as Rookie-of-the-Year marks the fourth time overall and third consecutive ROTY honor for the CC program. Current teammates Bridget Hanley and Maggie O’Donnell were voted ROTY in 2021 and 2019, respectively, and Elise Buchard earned a share of the Newcomer of the Year honor in 2012.

Colorado College head coach Susan Stuart, the program’s first and only varsity head coach, guided the Tigers to a 10-8 overall record and the program’s fourth consecutive SCAC women’s lacrosse title as CC earned the 2022 conference crown with a 24-8 victory over Southwestern on May 2. During her 28-season tenure, the Tigers have posted a 294-136-1 (.690) overall record and made 11 appearances in the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship. This year’s COTY accolade marks the fifth time in her career she has earned SCAC Coach-of-the-Year honors, and she was named West Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Entering the 2022 season, Stuart ranked sixth among active coaches with five or more seasons (at the Division III level) in career victories.
