JAMES SETTLES OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior from Claremont, Calif., has been selected the SCAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for meets ran Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16. SCAC Cross Country Release (Week 3)
Settles captured first place individually and led the Colorado College men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Metro State Invitational Saturday in Denver, Colo.
Settles, who finished 26th at the same meet last year, won the 8K race in a time of 24 minutes, 50.51 seconds at altitude in Denver. He beat 107 runners from Division I and II teams, including 10 from Division I Air Force.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior Diego Flores of Trinity ran an impressive 23-second PR of 25:06 in extremely hot and humid conditions at the UIW Invitational on Saturday. That time puts him top three in the Trinity record books for the 8K. He helped the team to a second-place overall finish, beating out D-I teams that Trinity was behind just two weeks earlier. Flores finished ninth individually among primarily D-I runners. First-year Emilio Salas of Southwestern showed great poise in his first 8k ever. Although not the team's top finisher, he started out controlled and moved up in the race as others were fading. His racing savvy was rewarded with a fifth place finish in a tight team race where each and every place was needed. Senior Nico Walz of Dallas finished the 8K course at the Texas Tech Open with a time of 31:33 while running on a very wet, sloppy and difficult course against NCAA Division 1, NCAA Division 2, NAIA, and NJCAA Division 1 opponents.
