Will Floyd, Colorado College, Men's Swimming and Diving - Character & Community

WILL FLOYD OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior on the men's swimming and diving team from Atlanta, Ga., has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 7.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

When Floyd arrived at Colorado College in the fall of 2018, he had a good amount of community service under his belt, but during his four years at the school, his willingness to help those less fortunate than him has expanded to the campus and Colorado Springs communities.

Floyd made an immediate impact as a Tiger in the pool. He earned all-conference honors as a freshman on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished second at the SCAC Championships. Another highlight from his career was posting a lifetime-best time during an exhibition 100-freestyle race at the SCAC meet as a sophomore.

However, his biggest impact prior to and as a member of the Colorado College community has been outside of the Schlessman Natatorium walls.

During his freshman and sophomore years in high school, Floyd attended boarding school in Costa Rica and worked at an orphanage in Alajuela. The orphanage was right next to the school so it was a great opportunity for students to give back by teaching children basic math and language skills while they were growing up.

“I would be there every Wednesday and Thursday after classes and almost every Sunday,” Floyd said. “It was a really unique opportunity to work with a new community and get to know the people of Alajuela while I lived there. It made me really grateful for all the opportunities my parents had given me and helped me better understand that giving back meant much more to a community while living there.”

He realized the importance of getting to know the children he worked with and how special it was to watch them grow up during the two and a half years he was there. His interest in working with young children carried over to his college days, as he currently works with the LittleCatz Swim Clinic, teaching kids from low socioeconomic status in the Colorado Springs area water safety and swimming basics.

“My time at the orphanage instilled in me a great enjoyment for working with kids and has helped shape the way I interact not only with the children for LittleCatz, but also the leadership skills needed to take on higher responsibilities in athletics.”

Floyd also joins several of his teammates with a clinic for Special Olympics as well as working with Meals on Wheels in his hometown of Atlanta during the summer.

“As a family, we always spent holidays working with Meals on Wheels or offering a helping hand at homeless shelters,” he added. “It became something that is standard for me. Whenever I am home for summer or block break, especially during COVID, we are at the food bank or Meals on Wheels.”

That desire to help, as well as a recommendation from teammate Michael Heinonen, pushed Floyd to join the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at CC. His work on the Diversity, Education and Inclusion committee and serving as a representative to the SCAC, has peaked his interest in working more closely with student athletes.

In addition, as a member of the swim team, he has found a real passion for working with and alongside student athletes in the pool and the gym to create healthy lifestyles.

“I came to the realization that even after my four years of swimming for CC comes to an end, I can continue to work in athletics,” he added. “My head coach, Anne Goodman James, and strength and conditioning coach Emily Anderson have inspired me to pursue a master’s degree in kinesiology and a hopefully a career of coaching and/or leadership in collegiate athletics down the road.”
