ALEXANDER WARD OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a freshman defender from Portland, Ore., has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, February 28th.
Ward, in his first collegiate start, struck for the game-winning goal with just 32 seconds remaining to give Colorado College a dramatic 2-1 victory over St. Thomas at Stewart Field. Ward’s first collegiate goal was scored off a feed from senior midfielder Miles Montgomery, who took a short corner from sophomore midfielder Will Taylor outside the box on the right side. Defensively, he is part of Colorado College’s back line that allowed just 10 shots, only four of which were on target.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior midfielder Greg Petreas of Centenary played 95 minutes of the Gents' double-overtime tie against ETBU on Feb. 23 at home. He led a Gents' defense which lost two players to red cards early in the match as Centenary played the rest of the way down two men and still earned a tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Goncalo Pernas of Dallas recorded seven saves in the opening two games of the regular season for the Crusaders and posted a double overtime shutout in the win over Schreiner on Saturday. Freshman goalkeeper Rodrigo Lazo of St. Thomas recorded a shutout in his collegiate debut, securing five saves in a 0-0 double overtime draw against Houston Baptist. Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Weed of Texas Lutheran started in goal for TLU in both matches last week. He led TLU to a 1-1 record. In the 2-1 win at Dallas, he recorded two saves. In the 1-0 loss at Southwestern, he made six saves. Weed played all 90 minutes in goal in both conference matches.
