Kaelin posted a perfect 4-0 record at the No. 6 singles position last week for the Tigers, including a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jayden Harrison of Division I Seattle University in Kaelin's hometown of Mercer Island, Wash. He opened the week by rallying to defeat Josh Matabuema of 37th-ranked Pacific University, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (4) and beat David Lybeck of Puget Sound (6-0, 6-1) and Matous Young of Linfield (6-1, 6-2) in straight sets.
His strong opening to the season as catapulted him to No. 25 in the ITA West Region singles rankings.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
First-year Rafa Candelas Ruiz of Trinity sparked the 11th-ranked Tigers to a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams last week, defeating both No. 20 Colby College (Me.) and No. 37 Pacific University (Ore.) 8-1. Candelas Ruiz improved to 9-3 in singles play during dual matches this season, including his first wins of the year at lines two and three this past week. He notched the first singles point against Colby with a straight-set win at line three, then finished off the match win against Pacific with a victory at line two that also came in straight sets. Junior Anton Borovik of Southwestern supplied the clinching win at the No. 6 line against #20 Colby College (Me.), defeating his opponent, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Mario Gallinar of Schreiner clinched both matches from his No. 6 position this past weekend, helping the Mountaineers pick up 5-4 victories against both St. Thomas and Whitworth. Senior Rodrigo Yoshikata of St. Thomas went 2-0 at line one singles on the week against SCAC foes Schreiner and TLU. Yoshikata defeated his TLU opponent 6-2, 6-2, and Schreiner 7-6, 6-3.
