Colorado College's Fry Highlights NCAA Men's Cross Country Regional Performances

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Josh Fry, the league's two-time defending Runner-of-the-Year, finished 11th at the NCAA Division III Region X meet Saturday morning and qualified for next weekend's national championship meet. Results

Fry's performance paced the 31st-ranked Colorado College men, who led all SCAC squads with a sixth-place finish in a field represented by 29 different teams and 170 runners. The senior traversed the 8K Pomona-Pitzer campus course in a time of 25:13.1.

Running on its home course, the Pomona-Pitzer men took first place and the region's automatic berth into next weekend's NCAA Division III national championship meet with a team score of 35.

CC totaled 205 points and placed three runners inside the top 40. After Fry's 11th-place individual finish, sophomore James Settles placed 23rd in a time of 25:36.1 and senior Sam Rodriguez finished 38th in a time of 26:18.8. Other CC finishers included sophomore Devlin Swanson (71st - 27:05.8), senior Paul Olsen (74th - 27:10.2), junior Max Saliman (95th - 27:34.4) and first-year Andrew Han (123rd - 28:13.0).

Fry and Settles each earned all-Region accolades for finishing among the top 35 runners.

Trinity University finished in 16th place with a score of 409. The Tigers were led by first-year runner Will Salony, who finished in 45th place with a time of 26:28.9. Other Trinity runners cracking the top 100 included junior Ben Whittemore, who was 69th in a time of 27:05.5, and first-year Eli Karg, who placed 92nd in a time of 27:31.6. Rounding out the Tiger contingent was senior Joshua Morgan, who finished 111th in 27:56.7, first-year Ryan Tresaugue, who was 114th in 27:59.8, sophomore Joseph Herlin, who placed 118th in 28:06.2 and sophomore Jacob Ontiveros, who finished 127th in a time of 28:24.0.

The third conference team that made the trip to the West Coast was Southwestern University, which finished 22nd with a score of 608. The Pirates were paced by junior Noah Dennis' 103rd place finish in a time of 27:42.7. Trailing Dennis were teammates and first-year runners Xander Bailey and Brian Armijo, who placed 115th and 126th, respectively, in times of 28:00.5 and 28:21.9. Rounding out the SU contingent was senior C.P. Shaulis (144th - 28:27.9), senior Doug Ginsberg (150th - 29:58.4), senior Nathan Botros (158th - 30:29.6) and first-year Luke Markey (161st - 30:42.8).

A total of 32 teams will compete as a team at the NCAA Division III Championships, with the top finishing team from each of the 10 regions receiving an automatic bid and 22 bids awarded to at-large teams. In addition, 70 individuals, not on qualifying teams, earn automatic selection based on their finish at the regional.

The 2021 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship will be held November 20 and run on the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park course in Louisville, Ky.
