Colorado College's Settles' All-American Honor Highlights SCAC Performances at NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) sent 16 athletes to compete at the 2024 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, highlighted Colorado College’s James Settles’ All-American performance.

Settles earned First Team All-American honors for the second consecutive season with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000-meter final Saturday evening. Settles, who finished fourth in the 5K at last year's Division III national meet, completed Saturday’s race in a time of 14:21.65 after entering the competition with the 17th-fastest time in Division III.

Settles joins Julian Boggs as the only Colorado College males to earn multiple All-America honors in track & field. Boggs was an All-American in the 5K in 2006 (2nd) and 2007 (5th).
 
The Claremont, Calif., product finishes his career at CC as one of the most accomplished runners ever at the school. In addition to his two track & field All-America honors, he finished fourth in the 2023 Division III Cross Country Championships and captured six individual SCAC titles in cross country and track & field.

Trinity’s Justin Johnson secured Second Team All-American honors in the triple jump after he qualified for the finals with a leap of 14.64 meters on his third leap. Johnson finished ninth, missing out on First Team honors by just 0.11 meters with a mark of 14.63 meters.

Trinity’s Azariah Anderson finished 11th in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in 14.32 seconds, to secure Second Team All-American honors. Anderson, who qualified with the 16th fastest time coming into the championships, missed qualifying for the finals by just 0.04 seconds.

Southwestern’s Adrian Washington posted a tie for 11th-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 2.00 meters. Washington who entered the weekend tied for the 11th best mark in the field secured Second Team All-American honors with his effort.

In the men’s 4x100 relay, the Trinity quartet of Legend Grigsby, Orie Piken, Justin Johnson and Price Schultea finished 13th with a time of 41.09, while the Texas Lutheran squad of Justin Freeney, Byrce Powell-Chimene, Rickey Franks and Weston Guzman placed 15th with a time of 41.31.

Trinity’s Will Salony made his NCAA Outdoor Championship debut with a 19th-place finish in the 1,500-meters, stopping the clock at 3:56.64. Colorado College’s Josh Williams also made his outdoor track debut competing in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Williams finished 22nd in both with times of 21.92 and 50.39 respectively. Rounding out the NCAA competitors on the men’s side was Texas Lutheran’s Ezra Acero. Acero, competing in his second-straight NCAA Championship, scratched three times in his attempt to clear 4.54 meters.

On the women’s side, Colorado College’s Kendall Accetta led the way with her All-American performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Accetta qualified for the final with a program record time of 10:38.73 in the prelims, the 10th fastest time going into the final. In the finals, Accetta finished 12th to earn Second Team All-American honors with a time of 10:51.47. Accetta, who was a first-team All-American with a seventh-place finish in the same race in 2022, joined Sascha Scott as the only female student-athletes from CC to earn multiple All-America honors in outdoor track and field.

Trinity’s Joy Areola rounded out the SCAC performances at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning Second Team All-American honors in the triple jump. Areola, competing in her first outdoor championship, finished 13th with a leap of 11.78 meters.

Wisconsin-La Crosse captured the men’s team title with a cumulative score of 76 total points. Wash. U secured the women’s title with a team score of 71. The Colorado College men were the only SCAC program to score points at the Championship, finishing tied for 79th with one point.
