Colorado College's Settles Repeats, Trinity Racks up Three Major Awards to Headline 2024 Men's Track and Field Postseason Awards

SUWANEE, Ga. -- After exclusive voting by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), the league office today announced its 2024 Men's Outdoor Track & Field postseason awards.

James Settles of Colorado College repeated as the Men’s Track Athlete-of-the-Year, while Trinity University’s Justin Johnson earned the Men’s Field Athlete-of-the-Year honor.

Price Schultea of Trinity University was the coaches’ and sports information directors’ choice for Newcomer-of-the-Year and the Trinity University coaching staff rounded out the awards, earning Men’s Track and Field Staff-of-the-Year.

The all-conference team is determined by performance at the conference championship meet where the top three finishers in each event are recognized as All-SCAC. Complete All-SCAC Men's Track & Field Team 

Settles, a senior from Claremont, Calif., is just the fifth athlete in SCAC history to repeat as Track Athlete of the Year and the first since Texas Lutheran’s Marquis Brown was honored four-straight years from 2015-2018. He secured his second-straight All-American honor last month at the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 meters (14:21.65). It marked the first time an SCAC athlete has earned All-American honors in back-to-back NCAA Championships since Trinity’s Cody Hall (110 Meter Hurdles) and Texas Lutheran’s Marquis Brown (400 Meters) accomplished the feat in 2017 and 2018. Settles joins Julian Boggs as the only Colorado College males to earn multiple All-America honors in track & field. Boggs was an All-American in the 5K in 2006 (second-place finish) and 2007 (fifth-place finish). At the 2024 SCAC Championships, Settles earned three individual All-SCAC accolades, including runner-up finishes in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meters. His performance in the 5,000-meters (14:59.64) was the fourth-fastest time in SCAC Championship history.

Settles is just the second CC Tiger to earn SCAC Track Athlete-of-the-Year, joining Josh Fry who secured the award in 2021. Additionally, Settles was recognized as the recipient of the SCAC Men’s Track & Field Elite 19 Award for the second-straight year during the conference's postmeet awards ceremony in April.

Johnson, a native from Houston, Texas, had a banner year, culminating in a ninth-place finish (14.63m) in the triple jump to earn Second Team All-American honors at last month’s National Championship. At the SCAC Championships, Johnson was named Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Meet for the second consecutive year as the senior took first place in both the triple jump (14.42m) and the 400 hurdles (53.51), posted a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (15.43) a third-place finish in the long jump (6.85m), and was part of the Tigers' winning 4x400 relay team (3:14.75) to earn 33.50 points. His winning leap of 15.43 meters is the third best mark in the triple jump in SCAC Championship Meet history. He is just the fourth SCAC man to win the event three times and the first since Chrys Jones of Centre College won the event in 2009, 2019 and 2011. Johnson, who also secured SCAC Newcomer of the Year honors in 2021, is now just the third athlete in SCAC history to be earn both SCAC Newcomer and Field Athlete of the Year in a career. He joins Trinity’s Sean Majors and Texas Lutheran’s Alejandro Briseno as the only others in league history to accomplish the feat.

Johnson’s selection for SCAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year marks the sixth time in Trinity program history a Tiger has secured the award. He is the fourth different Trinity athlete to accomplish the feat and first since Majors won the award in both 2021 and 2022.

Schultea burst onto the scene, earning a pair of individual All-SCAC honors and running a leg on both the winning Tiger 4x400 meter relay squad and the runner-up 4x100 meter relay team. Individually, the Cypress, Texas native finished runner-up in the 200-meters and clocked in third in the 400-meters (48.58). His time in the 200-meters of 21.46 is this third-fastest in SCAC Championship history and a Trinity program record. In the relay events, his performance help Trinity capture its fifth-straight title in the 4x400 meter relay in an SCAC Championship record time of 3:14.75, while his effort in the 4x100 relay helped the Tigers post the third-fastest time in SCAC Championship meet history. Nationally, Schultea helped the Tigers 4x100 meter relay team qualify for last month’s National Championships where the quartet finished 13th with a time of 41.09.

Schultea is the sixth different Trinity Tiger to earn SCAC Newcomer of the Year honors and the first since Justin Johnson shared the award in 2021.

The Trinity University staff was selected for Track and Field Staff-of-the-Year after winning the 2024 SCAC Men's Track and Field Championship in April. Led by head coach Marcus Whitehead, the team picked up six individual victories and the 4x400 meter relay en route to the program's fourth straight and 15th overall SCAC Men's Track & Field title. This is the 15th overall time the Trinity University staff has been honored with SCAC Men's Staff-of-the-Year honors, and the eighth time under Whitehead's leadership.
