Kiran Singh, Colorado College, Men's Soccer - Character & Community

KIRAN SINGH OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior forward on the men's soccer team from Boulder, Colo., has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 1.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Growing up in a household full of educators and soccer players, it should come as no surprise that Kiran Singh feels right at home as a member of the Colorado College men’s soccer family.

After all, few schools can meet Singh’s desire to get a world-class education while playing for a nationally competitive soccer program.

However, Singh’s college career didn’t start that way. In fact, his journey led him more than 1,700 miles east on Interstate 70 to Haverford, Pa.

Like many athletes, Singh’s bolder side and desire to forge his own path led him away from his own backyard. After graduating from Fairview High School in Boulder, Colo., Singh opted to play at Haverford College in a northern suburb of Philadelphia. A family and mountain man at heart, Singh quickly realized the pitch isn’t always greener somewhere else and he began exploring the options to return to the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies.

One of the men who mentored Singh throughout his career was his high school coach, Jeff Frykholm, who had a little experience helping transfer players find a new home at Colorado College.

The Frykholm name should be very familiar to Colorado College fans as well as opponents throughout the SCAC, and no one was better prepared to articulate the opportunities that awaits a player who decides to transfer to CC and become a member of the men’s soccer family.

Two of his sons, Soren and Joel, not only transferred to Colorado College after playing elsewhere, but they enjoyed extremely successful careers both on the pitch and in the classroom. Soren played a year at St. Olaf College, while Joel played two seasons at Pacific Lutheran University, and they took advantage of the opportunity to play together as Tigers.

For Kiran, the opportunity to get a world-class education was too good to pass up. But getting the chance to play with his younger brother, Sajji, was as they say, a no-brainer.

After competing in different age groups for most of their club careers, the Singh brothers had always dreamed about playing together in college. That became a reality on Aug. 30, 2019, when Colorado College played host to Albion College at Washburn Field. Kiran scored twice and Sajji scored once to lead CC to a 4-1 victory over the Britons.

Later that season, in a 6-0 victory over Johnson & Wales University, Sajji scored the final goal off of an assist from Kiran, which marked the first of three times the Singh brothers combined on a goal.

During the 2020-21 spring season, Kiran scored off a touch from Sajji in the 2-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas, and then returned the favor in CC’s 2-1 overtime victory against Austin College.

All three of those goals played out in front of their friends and family members, many of whom reside in Colorado Springs.

Despite missing five games due to an injury this season, Singh still ranks third on the team with five goals and tied for fourth with 11 points.

In the 2-1 overtime victory against No. 25 Gustavus Adolphus College in the 2021 season opener, Singh tied the game on a direct kick from 23 yards out in the 80 minute. Then 6:15 into overtime, Singh struck for the first ‘Golden Goal’ of his collegiate career to cap CC’s dramatic come-from-behind win.

While the first-team all-SCAC selection has made a name for himself on the pitch, the majority of people at Colorado College know Singh for his work on academic side of campus.

Singh owns a 3.77 grade-point average as a mathematical economics major, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Within the Economics and Business Department, he has served as a learning assistant for a number of classes. He also worked as a research assistant under Professor Aju Fenn.

Singh also has served as a peer tutor and consultant in CC’s Quantitative Reasoning Center since 2020, and provides additional tutoring on an individual basis. In those positions, Singh is able to share his love and knowledge of mathematics with other students, which is no surprise considering that three of his relatives are and were college professors.

In return for his outgoing nature and desire to help others, Singh extended his campus family well beyond the brotherhood of the men’s soccer program and cultivated a larger and more diverse fan base for the team.

Singh also has merged his love of soccer and his love for mathematics into his senior thesis, which was made possible through him receiving the college’s Crown-Goodman Presidential Scholarship, as well as the Economics and Business Department’s Van Skilling Award and Academic Opportunities Grant.

With assistance from Fenn and Vice Provost and Associate Professor Pedro de Araujo, Singh is analyzing the competitive balance in the English Premier League and the COVID Pandemic’s Effect on competitive behavior.

Always the analyst, Singh is weighing several options after graduating in May 2022. He is leaning toward staying in Colorado to pursue a career in business, finance or as a consultant. He also could follow in the footsteps of some of his CC soccer brothers by extending his collegiate career as a graduate transfer.

Regardless of where his cleats take him, Singh surely will continue to work toward being the best version of himself and bringing out the best in others.
