INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Recent Colorado College graduate Sam Hum was named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which is awarded to a select group of student-athletes who excel academically and athletically. Nationwide across all NCAA divisions, only 21 scholarships are awarded for both men and women from each sports season (fall, winter and spring).
Hum, who graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in computer science, recorded a 3.93 grade-point average during his four-year career while playing on the men's tennis team.
"Sam was always such a hard-working and positive influence in our program," Colorado College tennis coach Anthony Weber said. "We are so proud of his accomplishments on and off the court, and excited to see where he goes from here."
This past spring, Hum posted a 3-2 record at No. 1 singles and was an all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference selection. He defeated SCAC foe and 2019 all-conference selection Vesko Lekovic, 6-3, 6-3, for his first victory of the season, then wrapped up the campaign with victories over Christian Albrechtsen of Division II Colorado Mesa and Matthew Stephenson of Texas Lutheran, both by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
Hum, from San Diego, Calif., received the SCAC's Elite 19 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who has completed the equivalent of at least 60 credit hours, has at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA, and earned all-SCAC first- or second-team honors that season. He also earned a spot on CoSIDA's Academic all-District At-Large Team last month and is on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
"I am beyond humbled and honored to be awarded the scholarship," Hum said. "I know that this would have been impossible without the support from my teammates, coaches, professors, and personnel in the athletics department. They helped me grow immensely not only as a person but also as a scholar and an athlete during my career. I am extremely proud to call myself a Tiger and a CC alum."
Candidates for the postgraduate scholarship are nominated by the school's faculty athletics representative and screened by regional selection committees. Recipients then are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
To qualify for the $10,000 scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) and have been a member of a varsity team. Recipients also must intend to continue academic work beyond the bachelor's degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
"Sam is a very impressive person both in the classroom and on the tennis courts," said Pedro de Araujo, CC's faculty athletics representative. "He exemplifies what being a student-athlete is all about. I am thrilled that NCAA thought the same. This scholarship could not have gone to a better student. We are very proud of Sam and I am sure he will continue to thrive as he pursues graduate school."
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
