Colorado College and Concordia (Texas) Share Title at SCAC Esports Showdown

SUWANEE, Ga. -- At this year's SCAC Esports Showdown, which was held over the course of the last two weekends and as a virtual event for the first time since 2021, Colorado College and Concordia University (Texas) both finished with 14 team points and shared the 2024 conference crown.

At the league's first online-only Esports Showdown competition since the COVID pandemic forced the 2021 event to move to a virtual format, Colorado College and Concordia University (Texas) both finished with 14 total team points to share this year's top team honor.

The SCAC Esports team title is the third straight and fifth overall for Colorado College while Concordia University (Texas) picks up its second SCAC Esports team title. The two also shared the Showdown crown in 2021.

This year's event, which is the sixth since the conference started sponsoring Esports in 2019, was the first to be played in the fall as the league's Esports coordinators decided to move to a fall schedule beginning with this year's event to free teams up for regional and national competition in the spring. Additionally, the Showdown will be played virtually again in 2025 with an in-person event scheduled at a site to be determined in 2026.

This 2024 Showdown was kicked off by Rocket League, where Colorado College and Austin College faced off in the grand finals. The CC Tigers left little room for doubt to its team supremacy in the event, defeating Austin College with a swift 4-0 victory - the program's fifth consecutive team title in Rocket League.

The next game competition was the Super Smash Bros. Crew battles, which saw Concordia (Texas) secure a decisive victory over Colorado College to take first place honors.

The following day, the Apex Legends’ season concluded, with Schreiner University once again leading the pack with 988 total points, marking the third consecutive year the Mountaineers have taken top honors in the event.

Later that night, Super Smash Bros. singles took place, with Concordia’s own J$mash and Lando taking first and second place honores, respectively, and Hendrix College's Arkansauce taking third.

Finally, the Valorant competition concluded the following weekend as the top four teams: Colorado College, Concordia (Texas), Schreiner, and Hendrix, faced off in a double elimination bracket. The grand finals went back and forth as Colorado College and Concordia, in a rematch of last year's team final, traded round after round until a close 13-11 victory on map 5 swung the match in CC's favor - the program's third consecutive championship in the event.

With the team totals tied, and after the league's tiebreaker could not end the deadlock (highest team scored finishes), co-champions were declared. Colorado College and Concordia (Texas) took home an equal number of first and second place finishes across the five events scored at this year's Showdown as Colorado College took first place in Valorant and Rocket League along with second place finishes in Apex Legends and Super Smash Bros. Crew. Concordia (Texas) took first place in Super Smash Bros. Crew battles and the Smash Singles tournament, along with a second place showing in both Valorant and the Smash Singles event.

Rounding out the 2024 Showdown team standings, Schreiner was third with nine points, followed by Austin College with four. Hendrix College, McMurry University and Trinity University each tied with three team points.
