MADDIE FATE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior middle blocker from Croton on Hudson, N.Y., has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 1)
Fate led the second-ranked Tiger volleyball team to a 3-1 record at its season-opening Trinity National Invitational over the weekend, with the lone loss coming to #15 UW-Oshkosh. Fate finished with 18 total blocks (1.38 per set), tallying six solo and 12 assists.
Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
First-year middle hitter Rita Araya of Austin College made her first collegiate weekend a memorable one, helping the 'Roos to a 4-0 start to the 2023 season while appearing in three matches. Araya averaged 1.13 blocks-per-set with nine total blocks, including one solo and eight assisted in eight sets. She also averaged 2.0 kills-per-set with a .342 hitting percentage and added eight service aces amd three digs. Junior defensive specialist Kara Spice of St. Thomas had an impressive weekend for the Celts, totaling 60 digs in just two matches while anchoring the back row. She posted 41 digs in the first match and 19 in Saturday's second victory over LeTourneau. She also added five service aces. Junior libero/defensive specialist Faith Coldewey of Texas Lutheran led the Bulldogs with a team-high 76 digs on the weekend, which included a career-high 30 digs in the team's five set win against Whitworth. First-year outside hitter Mychael Singleton of Dallas made her presence known over the Crusaders' opening weekend, leading the team with 48 digs and 3.43 digs per set while also notching 28 kills with a .267 hitting percentage. She posted those offensive numbers over four games, while playing as the teams libero for the entirety of the first match against Arlington Baptist. Junior defensive specialist/libero Geneva Nedrow of Southwestern stood on her head defensively for the Pirates in the Pacific Coast Classic, posting a career-high 30 digs in the Pirates' win over Pomona-Pitzer. The junior averaged 5.42 digs per set in the Pirates' three-game California trip, with the second-highest dig total of the weekend coming against third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where she tallied 18. First-year libero Meghan Gannon of Colorado College paced the Tigers with 77 digs, including a career-high 26 in a 3-2 victory over Hardin-Simmons, as CC went 2-2 at the Pikes Peak Challenge. She also added 17 assists from the libero position. Junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Kiara Liedy of Centenary had an impressive opening weekend for the Ladies, recording 62 digs over four matches (14 sets) with five aces and only three errors in 16 total attacks.
