SCOTT JOHNSON OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior goalkeeper from Seattle, Wash., has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played from Monday, October 21st through Sunday, October 27th. SCAC Men's Soccer Release (Week 9)
Johnson made his fourth consecutive start in net for the Pirates and registered his third-straight and fifth shutout of the season in a pair of key SCAC road wins. On Friday, in a 1-0 win over Centenary, Johnson corralled four saves and then followed that performance up with seven more saves in the Pirates 4-0 win over Ozarks. Johnson and the Pirates, who are fighting for their 14th-straight SCAC Tournament appearance, have now gone over 295 straight minutes without conceding a goal in conference play.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior defender Sam Spencer of Austin College had a strong weekend as the 'Roos went 1-1, with a narrow loss at Concordia and a 5-3 win at McMurry. Against the War Hawks, Spencer had a goal and an assist in the victory. The assist was his seventh of the year, which ties him for second in the SCAC in that category despite playing from his defensive position. First-year goalkeeper Sebastian Lutin of Centenary complied 16 total saves, including 10 in a tough loss to Southwestern last Friday night. Lutin has now registered 10+ saves three times this season and leads the SCAC with 90 total saves on the year. Senior defender Curtis Hale of Colorado College led the Tigers’ defense to one of their best performances of the year, shutting out Schreiner and limiting the Mountaineers to just one shot, a season best for CC. It marked the Tigers eighth-consecutive shutout, the longest such streak in program history. Then in a 1-1 draw against Trinity, Hale rang home is first goal of the season. Senior defender Cameron Burleson of Concordia helped the Tornados to a 2-0 weekend, netting the game-winner in the 80th minute in a 3-2 win over Austin College on Friday and then helped orchestrate a clean sheet, holding Dallas to just three shots (one on target) in a 6-0 win on Sunday. Senior midfielder Trey Castillo of McMurry led a strong defensive effort this past weekend for the War Hawks, highlighted by its first clean sheet in conference play, defeating Dallas 2-0. Castillo also scored his first goal of the season in a 5-3 loss against Austin College. Senior goalkeeper Noel Pena of Texas Lutheran registered 10 saves and posted a pair of shutout victories on the road at Ozarks (2-0) and at Centenary (1-0). Pena also became the program’s all-time leader with 27 shutouts in his career. Fifth-year JonConnor Rule of Trinity spent 162 minutes on the pitch and anchored a Tiger defense that recorded their ninth shutout of the season and held No. 4 Colorado to just one goal in the match.
