Despriet clinched a 6-3 road victory for the 20th-ranked Pirates over 19th-ranked Cal Tech on Sunday. Playing her first singles match of the spring, Despriet beat a very tough opponent at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), to put Southwestern in front 5-2 and guarantee the victory.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Junior Cate Cushing of Trinity clinched the 7-2 match victory for the 16th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team over NCAA II Dallas Baptist on Friday. After the Tigers swept doubles to take the early lead, Dallas Baptist rallied by winning the first two singles matches to trim the lead to 3-2. After Trinity made it 4-2 with its first singles win of the day, Cushing finished off a straight-set 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win at line four to clinch the match for the Tigers. Cushing improves to 3-2 in singles play this spring, though her only losses have come against NCAA I opponents.
