SUWANEE, Ga. -- The inaugural D3Baseball.com Team of the Week for the 2023 season was announced on Tuesday and a trio of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) athletes were recognized for their performances through the first two weeks of February.
The opening two SCAC pitchers of the week in Centenary sophomore Tyler Herrea and St. Thomas senior Chris Parsons, along with Southwestern junior outfielder Maxwell Mims were all recognized at the national level this week.
Herrera dazzled on the mound in the Gents opening day victory over Ozarks, 11-1, tossing a complete game, one-hitter with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He faced 25 batters, allowed the one hit and walked one, all while giving up one unearned run in seven innings of work.
Parsons was untouchable on the mound in the Celts 3-0 victory over McMurry last weekend. He allowed just one hit and struck out 11 batters in eight innings of work. Parsons didn’t allow a single walk and has yet to allow a single run through his opening 15 innings of action this season.
Mims recorded six hits, two home runs, three runs scored and eight RBI in the three-game series vs North Park including a walk-off hit in the Pirates' first game of the series versus North Park to get the 4-3 win. He is batting .545.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its 12th season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors.
Herrera, Parsons and Mims are the first SCAC student-athletes to garner National Team of the Week honors since Southwestern’s Henry Fisher received the honor during week nine of last season. This is the first time since 2018 when Chase Almaguer of Austin College, Michael Goodrich of Trinity and Nathan Patton of Dallas that a trio of SCAC athletes have been recognized in the same week.
