Trinity Women's Soccer Earn Fourth Straight SCAC Title With 1-0 Shutout of Southwestern

After over 85 minutes of scoreless play, Trinity's Clara Richards pushed one past the Southwestern keeper, giving the Tigers the only goal they would need for the victory and a berth into next weekend's NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite Trinity holding an 11-2 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes, the two teams battled to a 0-0 halftime lead. 
  • Richard's goal in the 86th minute, is the latest goal scored in a 1-0 regulation game in SCAC women's tournament history. 
  • Trinity outshot Southwestern, 20-7, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Tigers attempted four corner kicks compared to one for the Pirates.

NOTABLES

  • Graduate midfielder Emma Everts was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Offensive Player. Everts was held scoreless in Sunday's championship match but had the second score in Friday's semifinal victory against Dallas. For the weekend, she had five shots with three on goal, including the one score.
  • Sophomore defender Ilsa Newland was named SCAC Tournament Defensive MVP as she and the Trinity defense recorded two shutouts on the weekend, extending the Tigers SCAC Tournament shutout streak to 15 straight matches. Newland played 150 minutes over the two matches, including the full 90 in Sunday's title contest.
  • The two tournament shutouts were the ninth and 10th of the season for the Tigers.
  • The conference championship is the 27th for the Trinity women's soccer program, equaling the 27 won by Trinity men's tennis and representing the most by any one program in SCAC history.
  • Southwestern's Johnna Campbell finished the tournament with 10 saves, bringing her career total to 34, fifth most in SCAC Tournament history. 
  • In the SCAC postseason tournament, Trinity holds a 28-1-2 record.
  • This marked the seventh consecutive year the championship winning team has not allowed a goal scored during the tournament.
  • The Tigers earn their 27th NCAA Tournament bid since 1992.

As SCAC tournament champions, Trinity (12-4-2), the seventh-ranked team in the most recent NCAA Region X rankings, will receive the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament and will find out its opponent when brackets are released tomorrow. Southwestern ends its season with an 8-9-2 overall record.
