SCAC Sends Four to NCAA Individual Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Represented by a pair of individual qualifiers and one doubles team, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) had four players qualify for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships it was announced on Wednesday.

For the individual championships, the national committee selected a percentage of singles players and doubles teams from each of the four regions. The individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

Southwestern’s Nina Mitrofanova and Trinity’s Zoe Kaffen each earned a spot in the singles tournament.

Mitrofanova who earned All-American status in 2019, was the No. 1-ranked singles player in the West Region, the highest regional ranking in program history. The sophomore posted a 10-6 record for the Pirates, including a 10-1 record against NCAA Division III opponents. 

Kaffen is a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American in doubles, earning the honor after winning back-to-back ITA Regional Doubles Championships in the Fall of 2019 and 2020. The senior has won 49 career singles matches with the Tigers, including a 7-7 overall record this season. She has posted a 7-7 overall record in singles play this season, including a 6-2 mark against Division III opponents.

Trinity’s duo of junior Megan Flores and first-year Cate Cushing were selected to compete in the doubles event.

Flores and Cushing sported an 11-5 doubles record this season, playing the top line for the last two months of the season for the Tigers. The duo finished the year with six consecutive victories and held a 9-1 record against Division III opponents in 2021.

The tournament will take place May 28-30 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, following the team championships that will be held there May 24-26. The bracket for singles play will be released by the NCAA on May 26.
