Southwestern Women SCAC Championship Bound After Outlasting Texas Lutheran 2-1

First-year midfielder Jackie Powell scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation to provide the final margin and push the Pirates into Sunday's championship match.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Southwestern's Samantha Hazen led off the scoring, getting the Pirates on the board with her fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute. The goal was assisted by Alexis Salinas.
  • That score held until the 72nd minute when Texas Lutheran's Kelly Wolfe, off an assist from Elaina Barrientes, evened the match at 1, before Powell's heroics provided the final margin for Southwestern.
  • Texas Lutheran outshot Southwestern, 14-8, including 10-4 in the first half.
  • The Bulldogs also held an 6-3 edge in corner kicks as well as a 56 percent to 44 percent edge in time of possession.

NOTABLES

  • Southwestern advances to the SCAC final for the sixth time in program history and second time in three years.
  • The two teams had just played last weekend in the final regular season game for both teams with TLU taking the 4-2 victory in Seguin. 
  • This marked the third straight year the two had met in the SCAC semifinals, Southwestern defeated TLU 4-0 in 2021 and TLU advanced in PKs over Southwestern last year.
  • The victory gives Southwestern a 3-0-2 advantage against TLU in SCAC tournament play.
  • Texas Lutheran ends its season with a mark of 9-5-4.

UP NEXT

Southwestern (8-8-2) advances to Sunday’s championship match against Trinity with opening kick at SaberCats stadium scheduled for 11 a.m. CT. It will be the seventh time the two programs have squared-off in the conference tournament with six of those match-ups coming in the conference final. Trinity holds 4-0-1 advantage in those previous title match fixtures, including a 5-0 victory in their last meeting in 2021.
