JOHNNA CAMPBELL OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a sophomore goalkeeper from Katy, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Sunday, September 12th. SCAC Women's Soccer Release (Week 2)
Campbell kept a clean sheet through three games this past week, shutting out Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry, and Hardin-Simmons in three 1-0 victories for Southwestern. Campbell finished the week with 19 saves, recording six against UMHB, eight against McMurry, and five against Hardin-Simmons. She now leads the SCAC in total saves (25), save percentage .926 and is second best in the league with a 0.39 goals against average through the opening five games of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Avery Sanderson of Centenary led the Ladies to a pair of victories this past weekend, including a 2-1 win over Alcorn State on the road last Wednesday, marking the first time that Centenary defeated a Division I opponent in the current division III era (2011-present). Sanderson started the match versus Alcorn and played the first half, recording five saves. She then played the entirety of the Ladies' 1-0 double-overtime win at St. Thomas on Friday and made one save. Sanderson is now 2-1 on the season with a shutout and seven saves. Junior defender Sierra Blackwell of Schreiner helped stabilize a defense that allowed just 14 shots on goal over two games for the Mountaineers last week. Freshman goalkeeper Charleigh Phipps of Texas Lutheran was outstanding in net last week, securing 14 saves in two games, allowing just one goal as the Bulldogs posted a 1-1 record. Phipps posted a .933 save percentage and a 0.48 goals against average. Senior midfielder Camryn Beall of Trinity had a strong weekend and helped the defense out tremendously. Beall teamed up with the backline to help Trinity improve to 4-0-0 after sweeping the weekend. The Tigers defeated Cal Lutheran and the defense held the high-powered offense to just two goals. Beall and the Trinity backline also held East Texas Baptist to just one goal in their 4-1 win.
