Nathaniel Blake, Southwestern University, Men's Soccer - Character & Community

NATHANIEL BLAKE OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior on the men's soccer team from Helotes, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning October 31.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Nathaniel is a captain of the Pirate’s men’s soccer team and enjoys his role as a quiet leader. He is a player who gives maximum effort on the field and a person who is willing to do the little things behind the scenes in order to help out his team.

Nathaniel is also a member of the Honor Council of Southwestern University - a group whose members are nominated and voted upon by their teachers and peers. Under the Honor Code, students complete daily assignments, write term papers, present projects, publish creative and informative work, and take examinations at their own will.

Students write and sign the Honor Pledge when completing every examination, paper, quiz, and other professor-designated assignments to reaffirm their commitment to honorable conduct. The Honor Council exists to enforce the Honor Code of Southwestern academics. If a student is found to break the Honor Code, they must go before the council in a hearing and will go through protocols to plead their case or receive discipline for breaking the code.

In addition to serving on the Honor Council, Nathaniel is one of the leaders of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organization. As a FCA leader, Nathaniel assists in organizing FCA events for his peers on the campus of Southwestern. FCA, although a christian organization, promotes the love, support and fellowship of all students on campus, not just athletes and not just those involved in religion. FCA meetings usually involve games between members, motivational messages and sessions where members can discuss aspects of their daily lives.

“Our culture on the soccer field is very competitive and we are a big family," said Nathaniel. "FCA is another opportunity for me and others on our team to meet new people and build relationships.”

“We want people to come as they are, our goal in FCA is to be loving to other people first and showing people you care about them, our aim is not convert people but to build a place where others feel supported in everything they do.”
