LAUREN FULENWIDER OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior guard on the women's basketball team from Abilene, Texas,, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 8.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Fulenwider, who has been a solid player for the Southwestern women’s basketball team, is using her time off the court to intern at ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Connect. She works as a service provider at a learning center for children with autism.

ABA Therapy is an individualized learning approach that is teaching language acquisition and behavior skills for children with autism.

While Fulenwider took this internship for her capstone class in psychology, she explains that she has been able to use the theories she has been learning in class by applying them with the experiences she has in her internship.

“It’s been cool to see it in action….. it’s been really fun! Most of the kids I work with are four and five years old and most of them I work with are verbal,” Fulenwider says.

In her internship, Fulenwider enjoys that she gets to work and play with the children she is working for, but she also observes therapy sessions that help her apply scientific methods that she is learning in her classes.

“I was actually surprised of how much I learned in the course that you see every day in the field,” she notes.

After her internship with ABA Connect, Fulenwider hopes to either continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree in special education with a focus in ABA or maybe by going to law school.

In the time that she has spent with the children, Fulenwider most appreciates the times that have made her internship special.

“Just little moments that happen with kids that remind me of my little brother...it’s little things like that is fun and nice little bonding moments.”
