BRANDON WALKER OF MCMURRY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore goalkeeper from Royse City, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Monday, September 2nd. SCAC Men's Soccer Release (Week 1)
Walker was instrumental in the War Hawks securing a 1-0 shutout victory over Lyon to open the 2024 season. Despite playing down a man for the final 66 minutes, Walker made five saves to secure the clean sheet and lift McMurry to the season opening victory. It marked the second-straight season the War Hawks have started 1-0 after not previously winning their opener since 2017.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore goalkeeper Jayson Baldwin of Austin College opened the year as the starting keeper for the ‘Roos and came away with a shutout victory on Sunday against Fontbonne, finishing the team's weekend trip to Colorado with four saves in two games, allowing two goals - one of which was an own-goal - in just over 171 minutes while minding the net. Senior defender Christopher Tarr of Centenary led the Gents to their first victory of the season in a 4-1 win over Huntingdon last Sunday. Tarr and the Gents defense limited Huntingdon to just two shots on goal and he jumped in offensively registering a goal and an assist as well. Sophomore defender Dylan Stapley of Colorado College was a force all over the field helping the Tigers post back-to-back shutouts and lift CC to a 2-0 record after outscoring its opponents 15-0. Stapley played a combined 141 minutes and even logged a goal and three shots on the offensive side of the field. CC's opponents were limited to only four shots and no goals, very much because of Stapley's play. Senior defender Brock Bernard of Ozarks was an anchor in the Eagles defense that allowed just 12 shots on goal over two games and posted a 1-1 record to open the season. Bernard also jumped in offensively playing a key role in the Eagles 5-1 win over Ecclesia, scoring a goal and then registering a second goal on the weekend in a loss to ETBU to lead the team with four points in the first two fixtures. Junior defender Raghav Sharma of Southwestern scored the first goal of the match and what would be the gaming-winning goal in the Pirates’ 2-0 win over Hendrix on Sunday. Sharma's header in the 20th minute would spur the Pirates onto their first 2-0 start in a full season since 2017 and first since the shortened 2020-21 COVID-19 year. Fifth year defender JonConnor Rule of Trinity led the Tiger men's soccer team to a pair of ties to open the 2024 season, leading a defense that yielded just 12 total shots over 180 minutes of action.
