ANNIKA FLORA OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior setter from Georgetown, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Setter-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 16th through Sunday, September 22nd. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 4)
Flora was outstanding leading Southwestern to its first win over Trinity since 2018, 3-1, on Saturday to open up SCAC play for both teams this year. The junior led all athletes in assists for the match with 28 (7.00 assists per set) on the day, allowing Pirate hitters to hit .214 in the win. Defensively, Flora was one of five Pirates to get double-digit digs (13) and was tied for second on the team in that category. Flora and the Pirates have won 10 of their first 11 matches for the first time since 2021 and just the second time since 2018.
Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Junior setter Kristi Hinze of Centenary had an impressive weekend for the Ladies in a pair of road matches at McMurry and Dallas as she totaled 35 assists (5.00 per set), 24 digs, seven aces, and two kills. She led the team in assists in both matches and her 14 digs and five aces against the War Hawks on Saturday are both season highs. Senior setter Annie Steger of Colorado College collected 38 assists in CC’s three-set sweep over St. Thomas in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday. She now has nine matches over 30 assists so far this season and added three kills and two service aces and helped the Tigers hit .279 as a team in the win. Junior setter Selena Cooper of Concordia racked up 73 assists over three matches, averaging 5.62 assists per set as the Tornados went, 1-2, highlighted by a win over Hendrix on Sunday. Junior setter Carli Colbert of McMurry averaged 4.86 assists per set to lead the War Hawks to a 1-1 weekend. She also had 21 digs on the weekend. Senior setter Shavonne Respondek of Texas Lutheran averaged 5.50 assists per set over the weekend, recording a double-double in the Bulldogs' 3-1 victory over Schreiner. Respondek had 22 assists and 17 digs in the victory. Sophomore setter Kendall DeRivel of Trinity had 44 total assists in last weekends matches against TLU and Southwestern. DeRivel totaled 6.29 assists per set across the two matches, and also added four aces and 11 digs. In the match against TLU, DeRivel had 20 assists (6.67 assists per set).
