ALI GRONA OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior defensive specialist/libero from Fredericksburg, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, March 15 through Sunday, March 21.
Grona totaled 57 digs through nine sets, averaging 6.33 per set, to help limit St. Thomas to just 9.33 kills per set on a .097 hitting percentage as the Pirates swept a pair from the Celts on Saturday.
For the season, Grona is second in the conference, averaging 5.71 digs per set.
Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Junior outside hitter Isabella Vasquez of Colorado College averaged 4.33 digs and 2.0 kills per set to help lead CC to a pair of sweeps over Texas Lutheran last weekend at Reid Arena. During Friday's 25-21, 25-10, 25-17 win, Vasquez recorded a season-high 16 digs and a block assist as the Tigers held TLU to a -.064 team hitting percentage, the lowest for an opponent this season. In Saturday's 25-15, 25-12, 25-10 victory, Vasquez recorded 10 digs and a block assist to help CC limit the Bulldogs to a .011 hitting percentage. She also produced seven kills on an error-free 12 swings to post a season-high .583 attack percentage. For the weekend, Colorado College held TLU to a combined -.031 hitting percentage. It was the sixth time this season an opponent hit below .100 against the Tigers. Senior defensive specialist Kaylyn Latin of St. Thomas had 61 digs, averaging 6.78 per set, as the Celts dropped a pair of tight matches to Southwestern over the weekend. Senior defensive specialist Sami Lin of Trinity led the second-ranked Tigers volleyball squad to a pair of home wins over the University of Dallas on Saturday. Lin tallied a team-best 17 digs over the two matches this weekend, averaging 2.83 digs per set to also lead the Tiger team. Lin also had a season-best three aces in match two against the Crusaders. Freshman defensive specialist/libero Jaycie Proctor of Centenary recorded a whopping 76 digs in the Ladies' two conference matches against Schreiner, posting 36 in match one and 40 more in match two. She entered Saturday's play sixth in the conference in digs with 77 (4.81 per game) and nearly matched her season total on Saturday.
