Dallas' Caples; Colorado College's Merrifield Tabbed SCAC Volleyball Players-of-the-Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Dallas junior Emily Caples and Colorado sophomore Sophie Merrifield earned SCAC Volleyball Players-of-the-Week after the first weekend of conference match ups took place this past weekend.

 

 

 

 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of September 16 – September 22

EMILY CAPLES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a junior right side setter from Walnut Crrek, Calif., has been selected the SCAC Volleyball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 16 through Sunday, September 22.
 
Caples was excellent for the Crusaders, leading them to three wins on the weekend including their first SCAC win over Centenary.Caples picked up 70 total kills and had a .275 hitting percentage in five games.

She averaged 4.11 kills/set including 15 kills over Austin College and Centenary, and 22 kills in a non-conference tilt against Arlington Baptist. During conference play, Caples boasted a .383 hitting percentage to go along with 43 kills.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior outside hitter Shelby Eaves of Austin College had an outstanding weekend for the 'Roos, averaging 4.83 kills and 2.35 digs per set. Junior outside hitter Sarah Sumner of Centenary led the Ladies with 37 kills and five blocks on the weekend including double digit kills against Dallas (14) and Austin College (17). Sophomore outside hitter Emily Phillips of Colorado College averaged 3.0 kills and 3.0 digs per set including kills of 15 and 10 against Austin College and Dallas. Junior outside hitter Callie Du Perier of Schreiner led the Mountaineers in kills with 51, including a 13 kill, 10 dig, and two block effort against Howard Payne. Sophomore outside hitter/right side hitter Macey Pool of Southwestern had an outstanding weekend for the Pirates, leading SU in kills with 31, averaging 2.82 a set with a .111 attack percentage. Junior outside hitter Vanecia Spencer of Texas Lutheran finished with a team-high 20 kills on .200 hitting, averaging 2.4 kills per set and chipped in defensively with five blocks (one solo, four assists) and two digs. Freshman setter Erika Edrington of Trinity finished with 51 assists (4.25/set) over the three matches, and led the team with three service aces, also recording 29 digs and a pair of kills for the Tigers.

 

SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of September 16 – September 22

SOPHIE MERRIFIELD OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a sophomore libero from Fairfax, Calif. has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 16 through Sunday, September 11.

Merrifield averaged 5.1 kills per set during Colorado College's three victories at the Divisional Matches last weekend at the University of Dallas

Merrifield began the weekend with seven in the sweep of Centenary College, recorded a match high of 26 in the four-set triumph over Austin, and added 18 against the Crusaders.

Merrifield
has reached double-figure digs in 13 of 15 matches this season and has posted 20 or more five times. She also finished the weekend with four aces and only made one receiving error on the entire weekend.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Fusselman of Austin College averaged 4.83 digs per set in five matches last week, totaling 87 digs with only seven reception errors. Sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Hailey White of Dallas totaled 51 digs over the weekend to lead the Crusaders Senior libero Jamie Burns of Schreiner had 56 digs and two service aces for Schreiner with a 19 dig performance against Southwestern. Senior middle blocker/right side hitter Lorin Froetschel of Southwestern recorded 11 blocks over the weekend, averaging one per set to lead the Pirates. She also added in six digs and 10 kills with a .188 attack percentage. Junior libero Megan Lee of Texas Lutheran continued her high play, averaging 6.8 digs per set and notching 68 total digs over the three matches. She also tallied two aces, 10 assists and four kills. Junior outside hitter Maggie Emodi of Trinity averaged 4.08 digs/set and a team-best 49 total digs in three matches.  She also recorded 10 blocks in her 12 sets played, averaging 0.83 blocks/set as an outside hitter. Centenary did not nominate anyone for the award.
