AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College women’s soccer team won their only match of the week, getting a 2-1 victory over the University of Dallas to bring their conference record to 5-5-1 on the year. The ‘Roos jumped on top in the 18th minute when Myranda Baumgartner scored her first career goal, but the Crusaders squared things  up in the 39th minute with a penalty kick to send the teams into the half with the score 1-1. In the second half, the ‘Roos used a counter attack with Erica Williams sending the ball long to Lauren Scott, who first beat one defender and then the keeper and pushed the ball just inside the right post in the 63rd minute of action to give the ‘Roos a 2-1 victory. Emily Brockette made three saves in goal for Austin College, which wraps up the regular season with a game against Centenary on Friday and UC-Santa Cruz on Saturday.

Centenary claimed a 1-0 decision over the University of Dallas in its only match of the week. Laurie Priftis scored her second goal of the season in the first three minutes of the contest and the Ladies held the Crusaders off the board for the remaining 87 minutes to claim the Senior Day victory and send head coach Glenn Evans off a victor in his final contest on Mayo Field. Erica Coker recorded four saves en route to claiming her fourth win of the season. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1 as the Ladies travel to Austin College.

The University of Dallas women’s soccer team went 0-2 on the week in conference road games. On Friday, in Shreveport, La., the Lady Crusaders were bested 1-0 by Centenary. Laurie Priftis’ goal in the second-minute held up in what proved a defensive struggle. On Sunday, in Sherman, Texas, head coach Angelina Pane’s squad fell 2-1 to Austin. Senior defender Emily Rogers squared the game 1-1 in the 38th-minute for Dallas, but the Lady ‘Roos prevailed thanks to Lauren Scott’s game-winning goal in the 62nd-minute from an Erica Williams assist. Dallas will wrap their 2013 season Friday and celebrate Senior Day versus the University of California-Santa Cruz. Before the scheduled 3 p.m. start, seniors Rogers, goalkeeper Brigid Hasson and midfielder Melissa Carpenter will have their career accomplishments detailed.

The Schreiner Mountaineers were 0-2 on the week.  On Friday, Schreiner lost a  match to Southwestern (0-2) and then was defeated by  #3 Trinity (TX) on Sunday (0-5).   This week SU will play host to Texas Lutheran on Friday, November 1st.

The Southwestern women went 2-0 in SCAC action this weekend to improve to 10-7 on the year and 9-2 in the SCAC. The two wins set a new SU record for most conference wins in a season with 9, besting the previous record of seven set by the 2007 squad. The Pirates defeated Schreiner 2-0 on Friday night and took down TLU 1-0 on Sunday for their final regular season road weekend. They close out the year at home against league-leading Trinity on Friday night at 6 p.m.

The Texas Lutheran women’s soccer squad held No. 3 Trinity without a goal for a half, but eventually lost 5-0 on Friday afternoon at Gustafson Field. The Bulldogs came into the game riding a four-game unbeaten streak and continued that strong play in the first half, holding the highest scoring offense in the country without a goal in the first 45 minutes. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Trinity got its offense going in the second half, scoring four goals in the half’s first 21 minutes to pull away. A goal midway through the second half was the difference as the Texas Lutheran women’s soccer squad lost 1-0 on a Sunday afternoon Senior Day to Southwestern. With neither team able to find a goal through more than 70 minutes of action, the scoring drought was finally broken by Southwestern’s Hayley Miesse, who put the Pirates on top with a goal in the 73rd minute. The goal was scored after Lindsay Jakszta took a shot that was saved by Bulldog keeper Erin Rose. Unfortunately, the rebound squirted out in front of Rose, who couldn’t get to it quick enough as Miesse beat her to the ball and finished with what turned out to be the game’s only goal.

No. 3 Trinity clinched the top seed in the SCAC Championships Tournament (November 8-9 at Texas Lutheran) with a pair of road wins in SCAC play over the weekend. The Tigers have now won 15 consecutive games, and have not allowed a goal in their last five contests.  Trinity has given up just two goals over the past 15 games. On Friday, Endaisia Love tied a school record with a four-goal performance against Texas Lutheran, and netted all four scores in the second half of play.  Love joins Allison Clapp (1998), Lori Smith (1999 and 2000), Lindsay Rowland (2001), and Kate Semmler (2003) as the only Tiger players to score four goals in a game. Michelle Lanier contributed three assists in the win over Texas Lutheran, marking the second time this season that she has had three assists in a game.  Kelsey Falcone also had a strong weekend, scoring three goals and two assists in the Tiger wins. Shelby Guenthardt is now tied for fourth in career goals at Trinity, and she also became the eighth player in Tiger history to reach 100 career points. Emily Jorgens is also moving quickly up the ranks among all-time Trinity leaders, tying for sixth in career goals, and pushing into fourth with 125 career points.  Jorgens needs two goals to be the first player in school history to have 40 goals and 40 assists in a career. Trinity will face off against Southwestern for the second time this season, after beating the Pirates 3-0 in San Antonio earlier in the year.
