In that same balloting, Cierra White of Austin College was
selected as SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year.
TLU’s Vega, a sophomore from Corpus Christi, Texas, is 18-0
this spring in singles play (27-3 counting the fall season), and is
the top-ranked player in the NCAA Division III West Region in the
latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. After winning
the 2013 ITA Southwest Region Singles Championship, Vega finished
fourth at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships in Fort
Myers, Fla. Last spring, she advanced to the NCAA DIII Women's
Singles Championship and played in the Round of 16 before losing to
the eventual national champion.
Vega received four first-place votes in the Player-of-the-Year
while Trinity University’s Kylie Hornbeck received the
remaining three votes.
White, a first-year player from Las Vegas, Nev., earned
All-Tournament honors for Austin College after going 2-0 at the
SCAC championships, which included victories against counterparts
from Schreiner (her team’s only point) and from Texas
Lutheran. She finished the season with an 11-3 mark at No. 3
singles. This fall, White teamed with Kate Willis to win the
“B” Draw Doubles title at the 2013 ITA Southwest Region
Championships, and also won the "B" Draw Singles Consolation
bracket.
White received four votes in the Newcomer-of-the-Year balloting,
followed by freshman Eliza Southwick of Trinity who received two
votes and Brooke Taylor of Texas Lutheran who received one
vote.
Schreiner’s Morgan was named SCAC Women’s Tennis
Coach-of-the-Year after leading his squad to a second-place finish
at the 2014 conference championship tournament. Competing with a
roster comprised of only freshmen and sophomores, Morgan guided the
Mountaineers to the conference championship final – a first
for the program in its NCAA era. When the Schreiner women won their
opening round SCAC match, it was the program’s first
post-season win since 1999. This year’s squad finished with a
13-9 overall mark.
Morgan received five first-place votes in the Coach-of-the-Year
balloting. Anthony Weber of Colorado College and Matthew Haugen of
Trinity received one vote each from their peers.
