Volleyball Recap (Week 8) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Dallas, Southwestern University and Trinity University all went 4-0 this week as every SCAC volleyball team is currently riding a win streak of some sort. 

Southwestern and Trinity both beat the No. 12 team in the nation, Eastern (Pa.) University.

AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College volleyball team won its lone match of the week against Southwestern Christian University by a score of 3-0, celebrating the team’s Senior Night by winning 25-19, 25-15, 25-15 to improve to 16-14 overall this season. Shelby Eaves had a big game for the ‘Roos with 19 kills and seven digs, and Bekah Newberry and Alyson Hicks added seven and six kills respectively. Alyse Magnuson had a strong all-around match as well, totaling 26
assists to go along with seven digs and two total blocks. This week the ‘Roos host the University of Texas-Dallas on Tuesday night and then host a SCAC event on Saturday and Sunday.

Centenary College was idle this week. The Ladies return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 as they travel to Sherman, Texas for the fourth SCAC Divisional of the season. Centenary opens play at 10:30 a.m. against Trinity with a 3 p.m. match against Texas Lutheran. They close out the divisional against Southwestern at 10 a.m. and Schreiner at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hahn tied her career high with 16 kills, but it wasn’t enough to get No. 7 Colorado College a victory in its annual Dink Pink match against Colorado Christian University. After dropping the first set, the Division II Cougars stormed back to record a 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 triumph and hand the Tigers their first home loss of the 2013 season. CC finished with 18 unforced errors and hit just .163 as a team. CCU also scored eight points on service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Phillips recorded her ninth doubledoubler of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore opposite hitter Courtney Birkett added 10 kills and had a hand in three blocked shots. Sophomore libero Sophie Merrifield recorded 29 digs, the 10th time this season she had more than 20 digs in a match. Merrifield also eclipsed the 500-dig mark against CCU, just the seventh time a Tiger has accomplished that feat in a single-season. She currently has 872 digs, which ranks 16th on CC’s all-time list. Colorado College tuned up for its final weekend of the 2013 SCAC regular season with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-13 victory at Johnson & Wales University. It marked the 20th time this season that the seventh-ranked Tigers have prevailed in three sets. Hahn and freshman outside hitter Abbe Holtze finished with a team-high nine kills. Phillips hit .400 with eight kills on 15 swings with only two errors.. Phillips also led the CC defense with a match-high 11 digs, while freshman middle blocker Keli Sherwood and Hahn each had a hand in four blocked shots. The Wildcats hit just .096 as team and became the 15th opponent to hit below .100 against Colorado College this season.

The University of Dallas volleyball team (16-13, 3-7 SCAC) went 4-0 on the week in non-conference action, achieving a sweep in every match. On Tuesday, in Irving, Texas, during the #SCAC8in8 Tour, the Crusaders defeated Dallas Christian College (25-15, 25-17, 25-10) and then Texas College (25-7, 25-12, 25-10). On Thursday, in Arlington, Texas, head coach Amy Byfield’s group downed Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College-Okla. (25-9, 25-18, 25-16) and Arlington Baptist College (25-15, 25-19, 25-18).

Schreiner University went 2-0 on the week. On Tuesday, the Mountaineers defeated Howard Payne 3-0 and then on Saturday, beat Our Lady of the Lake on senior night, 3-2. Schreiner will return to SCAC action with four matches at Austin College. The Mountaineers will face Dallas and Colorado College on Saturday and Austin College and Centenary on Sunday.

Southwestern University rebounded with four big wins including a 3-1 win over #12 Eastern on Saturday. Southwestern kicked off the weekend with a 3-0 routing of Webster by holding their opponents to .122 hitting percentage for the match with their defense getting stronger with each set. SU’s offense was once again firing on all cylinders as their match got underway against Springfield, but Springfield was just a little stronger as they hit over .325 in the first two sets to put the Pirates down 2-0. Southwestern turned things up another notch and posted their best offensive sets with a .350 attack percentage in the third and .444 in the fifth to win 3-2. With lots of momentum and playing some of their best ball of the year, Southwestern faced off with #12 Eastern. Southwestern dropped the first set 25-15 but rebounded with three straight set victories 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 to win 3-1. To close the weekend, Southwestern narrowly dropped the opening set 27-25 to Redlands, but quickly bounced back with three easy wins 25-17, 25-12, 25-19. As a team the Pirates hit .187 and held Redlands to only .041. Southwestern moves to 19-8 after the weekend sweep and have their final regular season conference weekend at Sherman next weekend, facing Colorado College, Dallas, Centenary and Austin College.

Texas Lutheran University was idle this past week. The Bulldogs will travel to Sherman, Texas this upcoming week for the SCAC Cross Divisional matchups. On Friday, they will face Austin College and Centenary on Saturday and follow that up with Dallas and Colorado College on Sunday.

No. 21 Trinity University swept four matches at the Trinity Fall Classic over the weekend, improving the team’s overall record to 25-4 this season. The Tigers recorded 3-0 wins against three teams this weekend, then rallied for a 3-2 win to clinch the tournament title in the final match on Saturday. On Friday, Trinity earned a 3-0 victory over 12th-ranked Eastern University to finish the opening day of action. Trinity resumes conference play at the SCAC Cross Divisional this weekend, facing off against Centenary College, Austin College, University of Dallas, and seventh-ranked Colorado College. The Tigers currently stand 9-1 in SCAC play, which included a 4-0 record at the first Cross Divisional of the season.
