Men's Basketball Recap (Week 11) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- With a weekend sweep of Trinity and Southwestern, Centenary (La.) extended its win streak to six games and moved into sole possession of second-place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings - just one game back of first-place Trinity. The Gents are currently 8-3 in the SCAC; 13-8 overall.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College split its two games over the weekend, using a lights out shooting performance to top Southwestern 97-94 before falling 79-63 against Trinity. Several players had outstanding weekends, with Ransom Okpala averaging 15.5 points and scoring 20 against Trinity while Alan Sullivan torched the Pirates for a career high 23 points. Sullivan averaged 15 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60% from the field and 75% from three point range. Jeremy Swisher added 12.5 points per game while shooting 54% from the field and 50% from three, and Brian Baehl had an excellent all around weekend, averaging 9.5 points, 6.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game. Austin Freet added 8.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, and grabbed 13 boards in the loss to the Tigers.

Centenary moved its season-long win streak to six games following victories over Austin College, Trinity and Southwestern this week. The win streak ties the longest in the conference by Trinity. Senior guard Jonathan Blount proved the catalyst for the Gents during the three games as he averaged 23 points and tied a career-high of 31 points in a 75-57 win over the SCAC’s top-ranked Trinity. The Shreveport, La., native shot 55.6 percent from the field along with a 45.5 clip from behind the arc. Blount was also 24 for 25 from the charity stripe for the week. Blount has scored in double-digits in all 42 games in the SCAC and has a double figure scoring streak of 50 games dating back to his sophomore season. The Gents also received contributions from a pair of freshmen in James Sapp and Kendall Demouchet. Sapp continued his torrid pace on the glass for the Maroon and White during the three games averaging 12 rebounds including registering a career-high 13 against Trinity. Demouchet averaged 13 points for the week and scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Gents in their win over Austin College. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Feb. 14 as they host Dallas.

Colorado College split a pair of games for the third week in a row. Chris Lesnansky poured in a career-high 30 points, including the goahead basket with 12 seconds to play, to give the Tigers a 70-69 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Sunday. Lesnansky scored on a shot off the glass, then on the game’s final possession, CC’s defense trapped the Bulldogs in the left corner and a desperation shot from the baseline barely scraped the front of the iron. To make his day even more memorable, Lesnansky became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark, finishing the contest with 1,015. He converted on 11 of 17 shots, shooting better than 60 percent from the floor for the seventh time this season. He also sank eight of 12 free throws. Ryan Milne finished with 19 points and five assists. With the first of his three steals, Milne climbed into sole possession of fifth place on Colorado College’s all-time list with 134, three more than Aaron Griess (1989-93). Justin Berardino added eight points and three critical steals during the second half for CC. On Friday night, the Tigers never got their offense in gear and dropped a 66-48 decision to Schreiner. After Milne sank a pair of free throws to make it 35-23 with 16:03 left, Schreiner used a 12-4 run to regain control. Milne led CC with 12 points and seven rebounds. Colorado College plays its final road games of the regular season next week when the Tigers visit Austin College and Centenary College on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Dallas went 1-1 in the week in a pair of conference home games. On Friday, in Irving, Texas, the Crusaders fell 75-68 to Texas Lutheran. On Sunday, in the Maher Athletic Center, head coach Jarred Samples’ squad won 71-63 over Schreiner to end a three-game skid. Dallas plays two SCAC foes this week on the road -- Centenary (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Austin (Saturday, 6 p.m.).

Schreiner
went 1-1 with a road victory over Colorado College (66-48) and a loss to Dallas (63-71) this past weekend. Twenty-two games into the regular season, Schreiner is being led by Senior AJ Myres, who is second in the SCAC in scoring with a 18.9 ppg average and Junior Stevan Guerrero, who leads the ‘Neers with 6 rebounds per game average, along with a 14.7 ppg. SU will play host this week to Southwestern (Friday, February 14th)and Trinity (Sunday, February 15th).

Southwestern dropped both games on the road this weekend and fall into last place in the SCAC after the losses. Southwestern posted an eight point comeback in two and a half minutes to pull within two late in the second but ultimately fell 97-94 on Friday night to Austin College. Southwestern led by double digits in the first half against Centenary but couldn’t hold onto the lead as Centenary got hot in the second half to defeat SU 71-57 on Saturday night. Now 6-15 on the year and 3-8 in the SCAC, the Pirates head out on their final road trip of the regular season, facing Schreiner and Texas Lutheran this weekend.

Texas Lutheran extended their road winning streak to three games on Friday with a hard-fought 75-68 win over Dallas. The Bulldogs were led by Jordan Kouremetis and his 23 points. The offense was rolling all game on its way to 57.1 percent shooting. The second half was especially productive for the Bulldogs as they blazed their way to 59.1 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs concluded the weekend with a battle against Colorado College that went down to the wire. Down by one with just nine seconds to play, the Bulldogs drew up a play for Joshua Alderman to get a look from the corner. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Alderman’s shot fell short as they fell 70-69. Four different Bulldogs finished in double figures on Sunday, with Garrett Wilkins leading the way with 18 points. Fourteen of those came in the second half.

Trinity split a pair of road games in SCAC play over the weekend, dropping a 75-57 game at Centenary to snap a six-game win streak, then rebounding with a 79-63 win over Austin College on Saturday night. The Tigers remain in first place in the conference standings, holding a one-game advantage over Centenary. Robert Kitzinger scored his 1,300th career point over the weekend, which is 11th in Trinity history. He is the 38th player in SCAC history to reach that milestone. Kitzinger needs just two more three-point baskets to become the first player in school history to hit 50 or more in all four seasons. He is also also 12 threes from tying Trinity’s all-time record, set by Rich Skeen from 1990-94. Trinity will play two more road games this weekend, facing off against Texas Lutheran on Friday night, and Schreiner on Saturday evening. The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 64-37 earlier this season in San Antonio, but lost a narrow 65-62 decision at home against Schreiner.
