Men's Basketball Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Colorado College picked up another win over a Top 25 opponents, defeating No. 16 Whitworth for a second time, this time by double digits. Southwestern also pulled a huge upset, erasing a 13 point deficit to come from behind and defeat No. 6 Mary Hardin-Baylor. Schreiner also picked up a win on the weekend, knocking off Hendrix on the road while Texas Lutheran defeated Hutson-Tillotson.

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

The Austin College men's basketball team fell 67-56 to the University of Texas-Dallas in the team's lone game last week, falling in a 12 point halftime hole and unable to dig its way out in the second half. Kevin Graham hit 6-of-12 shots on his way to a team high 15 points and added four rebounds, and Brian Baehl came off the bench to score 12 points and dish out a pair of assists. Jeremy Swisher hit 5-of-10 shots on his way to 11 points in the loss as the 'Roos were out-rebounded 43-25 in the game. Austin College also shot just 34.5% from the field as a team, including 1-of-16 from three, but hit 17-of-20 free throws in the loss. 

Centenary was idle this week after opening the season with a 2-1 record. Jonathan Blount was named SCAC Player of the Week averaging 26.3 points per game. The Gents return to action on Monday, Dec. 2 as they travel to LeTourneau. Centenary opens SCAC action on Friday, Dec. 6 as they host Austin College.

Colorado College started a season with a 4-0 record for the first time in head coach Andy Partee's tenure with victories over Carleton College and No. 16 Whitworth University in 2013 ACM Classic last weekend at Reid Arena. Sophomore forward Tyler Jonas buried a 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, then scored CC's first four points in the extra session to help the Tigers record a 71-66 win over Carleton College on Friday afternoon. Senior guard Ryan Milne poured in 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to help Colorado College wipe out a six-point halftime deficit, and he scored four more in overtime to clinch the victory. The Knights took an early 21-9 lead with 8:06 remaining in the first half, but sophomore guard Justin Berardino scored six points during a 14-8 spurt that saw the Tigers pull to within 29-23 after 20 minutes. Senior forward Daniel Webb scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for CC. Jonas finished with 14 points, while junior forward Chris Lesnansky pulled down a game-high 11 boards. Lesnansky poured in 25 points to lead the Tigers to an 81-65 victory over Whitworth on Sunday afternoon. He made eight of 12 shots from the floor and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line to lead Colorado College to its second victory over Whitworth in a span of nine days. During the 65-60 victory in Spokane, Wash., on Nov. 23, Lesnansky scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds. The Tigers got a big-time effort from Milne, who scored 15 points and dished out six assists with no turnovers. The senior point guard was named the classic's MVP after averaging 20 points and five turnovers during CC's two victories. After the Pirates took a 12-10 lead, Berardino scored eight of his nine points to ignite a 16-1 run that gave Colorado College a 26-13 advantage midway through the first half. During the contest, Milne climbed into 10th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,178 points and up to seventh with 166 three-point buckets. The Tigers play host to Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. 

Dallas was idle over the Thanksgiving holiday, but will play twice this week -- at Arlington Baptist College (Thursday, 7 p.m.); vs. Millsaps College (Saturday, 3 p.m.).

Schreiner went 1-2 this week with losses to Concordia (TX) and Rhodes before bouncing back and dominating Hendrix in a 75-55 victory at home. Schreiner will take a weekend off before returning to action on December 14th as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Southwestern fought back from 13 down in the second half to pull out a 62-58 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday evening to improve to 3-2 on the season. Ben Stiver was huge off the bench for the Pirates, going 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from three point range in the second half to lead Southwestern in scoring. They return to action on December 4th as they open SCAC conference action against rival Trinity in San Antonio. 

Texas Lutheran battled back from an early 12-point deficit and used a strong defensive effort in the second half to secure an 84-78 home win over Huston-Tillotson before the Thanksgiving holiday. The Bulldogs held the Rams to just 37 percent shooting and forced 10 turnovers in the second half to pull away. Garrett Wilkins, a junior guard, led the way for TLU, threatening to notch a triple-double with 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. He led the team in all three categories while tallying career highs in both rebounds and assists. Thomas Verm, a junior center, was a second-half catalyst, scoring nine of his 13 points and grabbing all three of his rebounds in nine minutes of action in the second half.

Trinity fell 67-73 to sixth-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor in the team's only game of the week on Saturday night in Belton, Texas.  The Tigers fell to 2-4 so far this season, with all six games being played away from home. Trinity makes its home and SCAC debut on Wednesday, facing off against Southwestern University at 6:00 p.m.  The Tigers will also travel to Chicago, Illinois, for a pair of tournament games at the University of Chicago.  Trinity plays Albion (MI) College and hosting Chicago on Friday and Saturday.  After this week, the Tigers will play seven consecutive games at home.
