SCAC Names Macosko and Spenkoch Golf Coaches-of-the-Year

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Ron Macosko of Trinity University and Carla Spenkoch of Trinity University were named men's and women's golf Coaches-of-the-Year.

Ron Macosko of Schreiner University was honored as men's Coach-of-the-Year after leading his squad to the SCAC title in the program's inaugural season in the league. At the 2014 conference championships, the 17th-ranked Mountaineers were dominant from start to finish, shooting rounds of 291, 291 and 284 (866 total) to shatter the SCAC's previous three-round scoring record by 17 strokes. The record had been held by Oglethorpe University who went on to win the 2012 NCAA Division III men's national title later that season.

For two days, the Schreiner team took its cue from junior Zach Oliver, who blistered the Tapatio Springs course with a SCAC record three-round total of 208 to finish eight strokes under par and earn 2014 SCAC Men's Golfer-of-the-Year honors. Three other Schreiner golfers earned All-SCAC honors. Junior Cheyne Kendall tied for second with a three-day score of 218 and joined Oliver on the All-SCAC First Team while sophomore Phillip Stewart tied for seventh (220) and earned Second Team recognition. Freshman Matthew McClung earned Honorable Mention honors and was also named the 2014 SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year.

Like Macosko, Carla Spenkoch of Trinity University guided her squad to a conference title - the first for the program since the inaugural SCAC women's golf championship in 1995. The 15th-ranked Tigers finished one shot clear (646-647) of 24th-ranked Southwestern University in the closest conference finish in SCAC women's golf history.

Trinity had four players make all-conference, led by 2013 SCAC Freshman- and Player-of-the-Year, Brigette Lee, who shot a two-day total of 159 and finished in third place. First-year players Christine Campbell and Hanna Ninner both shot a two-day score of 162 (tied for fourth). Niner's second-round 79 (+7) tied for the low round of the day. Lee, Campbell and Ninner were named First-Team All-SCAC for their efforts and sophomore Madeline Moran earned All-SCAc Second Team honors with a two-day score of 163 (tied for seventh). Ninner was also named 2014 SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year.

The SCAC Coach-of-the-Year honors are the first for both Macosko and Spenkoch.
