LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - SCAC play got underway last weekend as Trinity earned a sweep over Austin College to take an early lead in the standings. Meanwhile, Texas Lutheran and Schreiner each one two out of three this past weekend to take control of second place.

Austin College went 1-2 over the weekend
against Dallas Christian, falling 8-0 in game one before coming
back from six runs down to win 8-7 on a walk-off single in game
two. The ‘Roos wrapped up the weekend with a tough loss to
DCC, falling 4-2 after having held a 1-0 lead heading into the 8th
inning. In the second game, Hunter Wilson delivered the pinch hit
walk-off single in the 8-7 win, and Marcos Molina delivered a three
run double to help the ‘Roos storm back from being down 7-1.
In the third game, Josh Lewis tossed seven strong innings before
allowing three runs, only one earned, in the eighth as DCC staged
its own comeback to top the ‘Roos. Josh Coughennower and
James Arguello each hit .400 for the weekend and Molina finished
with four RBI and two stolen bases.
Centenary snapped an eight-game losing streak on Wednesday evening with a doubleheader sweep over Texas College. The Gents claimed the opener 2-1 and finished off the sweep with a 2-0 victory in the night cap. Centenary picked up strong pitching performances from Paul Arcement and Layton Tromba in the twinbill. The pair each logged complete game efforts. Arcement tossed 7.0 innings allowing a run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts while Tromba pitched 9.0, scoreless frames and scattering just one hit in the outing while fanning five batters. Chris Jones and Michael Schimpf each totaled two hits in the second contest accounting for four of the Maroon and White’s eight hits. Aaron Quintanilla paced the Gents in the opener with two of the four hits in the affair. Centenary returns to action on March 11 as the Gents host LeTourneau. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
Dallas opened conference-play with a 1-2 record on the week. On Saturday, in Seguin, Texas, the Crusaders fell 8-7 (F/9) to Texas Lutheran. On Sunday, head coach Fraser Holmes’ squad split with the Bulldogs. The navy and white won 4-3 (F/9), but then lost 7-6 (F/8) to conclude the series. On Wednesday, in Farmers Branch, Texas, Dallas faces Dallas Christian College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader (2x7). The club will host Centenary-La. this weekend -- Saturday (12 p.m. doubleheader; 1x7, 1x9) and Sunday (1 p.m.; 1x9) -- to resume SCAC competition.
Schreiner went 5-1 on the week, improving to 11-12 on the season; which ties last year’s total wins. The Mountaineers had home wins over DeSales University and Cardinal Stritch University and added two road wins against Southwestern University in Georgetown. Mountaineers now improve to 2-1 in conference.
A no-hitter from Brett Marcom highlighted the weekend for Southwestern as the Pirates took a mid-week non-conference game from Cardinal Stritch before dropping a pair over the weekend to Schreiner to open SCAC action. The Pirates fell on Friday night in extra innings before Marcom allowed just three base runners and struck out five en route to no-hitting the Mountaineers in a 2-0 win. The final game of the series was shortened by rain that moved into the central Texas area Saturday evening. Offensively Jake Pawelek was outstanding going 8-for-12 with a .833 slugging percentage and 10 total bases. The Pirate second baseman also recorded a triple as he extended his current hitting streak to six and has reached safely in 16 straight. Clayton Sparks also helped produce offense for the Pirates hitting .308 and driving in three runs during the week. Zach Lynch also set a Southwestern school record with four stolen bases on Friday night – just two shy of the SCAC single-game record.
Things got interesting late, but the Texas Lutheran baseball team survived a six-run ninth inning to hold on to an 8-7 win over Dallas on a rain-soaked Katt-Isbel Field Saturday afternoon, earning the Bulldogs their first SCAC win in program history. The win was the Bulldogs’ third straight and served as both teams’ conference opener. With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 12-5 (1-0 SCAC) and Dallas dropped to 9-7 (0-1 SCAC. The Bulldogs looked to have things pretty well in hand heading into the final frame, having exploded for six runs in the seventh to take a commanding 8-1 advantage heading into the ninth. Texas Lutheran senior Von Wendelrecorded his second walk-off single in four games in lifting the Bulldogs to a wild 7-6 victory in the SCAC series finale with University of Dallas. The Bulldogs (13-6, 2-1 SCAC) ralled for four runs in the eighth inning of the scheduled seven-inning contest and were twice down to their last strike against the Crusaders (10-8, 1-2 SCAC). At TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field, Dallas won the early game Sunday 4-3 and appeared ready to sweep the doubleheader from the Bulldogs with a 6-3 lead entering the eighth. Dallas trailed 3-0 into the sixth but put itself in position to win by scoring three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth. In the first game Sunday, Dallas freshman right-hander Evan Eubanks took a no-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning. Eubanks retired the first batter of the seventh before allowing three consecutive doubles (to Kanas and to Keaton and Klaus Bohrmann that tied the game at 2-2. With the shutout and the no-hitter now history, Eubanks gave way to Keele, who worked the final 2-2/3 innings and picked up the win. Dallas scored two runs in the ninth and held off a TLU rally in the bottom of the frame.
No. 3 Trinity improved its winning streak to 11 games after going 4-0 over the past week of action. The Tigers blanked DeSales 5-0 at home on Thursday, then swept a three-game SCAC road series at Austin College over the weekend. The Tigers won 9-1 in the opening game, then squeaked by with a 3-2 win to open a Sunday doubleheader. The series finished with a 9-3 victory for Trinity, which was also a milestone victory for Head Coach Tim Scannell. Coach Scannell recorded his 500th career victory on Sunday, reaching that total in the midst of his 16th season at the helm of the Tiger program. He is Trinity’s all-time leader in career wins (overall record of 500-199) and career winning percentage (.715). Trinity continues conference play this weekend, hosting Southwestern University for a three-game series that begins Friday evening. The series wraps up with a Saturday doubleheader. The weekend opens up a seven-game home stand for the Tigers, who will then have just three more home games the rest of the season.
