Trinity's Hubbard, Colorado College's Merrifield, and Southwestern's Lentz Named SCAC Volleyball Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity junior Layne Hubbard, Colorado College sophomore Sophie Merrifield, and Southwestern junior Chandler Lentz were named SCAC Volleyball Players-of-the-Week for their outstanding performance in conference play this past weekend.

 

 

 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of September 23 – September 29

LAYNE HUBBARD OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior outside hitter from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Volleyball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 23 through Sunday, September 29.

Hubbard led Trinity to a four-match sweep in SCAC play, highlighted by a 3-2 win over 10th-ranked Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. 

Hubbard served up a team-best nine aces over the weekend, as well as piling up 43 kills and a .267 hitting percentage in her 16 sets played.

Against nationally-ranked Colorado College, Hubbard led Trinity with a match-high 15 kills and eight digs.  She tallied 47 total digs for the weekend to also contribute defensively for the Tigers.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior outside hitter Shelby Eaves of Austin College averaged 3.94 kills and 3.71 digs per set for Austin College and added 10 total blocks in four matches last weekend. Sophomore setter/outside hitter Rachel Perkins of Centenary averaged 0.92 aces this weekend for the Ladies which moves her to second in the conference. Junior middle hitter Kristen Liberty of Colorado College hit .442 with 27 kills to help Colorado College win three of four matches last weekend in Georgetown, Texas. Junior right side hitter Emily Caple of Dallas had 36 kills on the weekend as Dallas traveled to Georgetown. Senior setter Jaemi Grovers of Schreiner had 122 assists and 13 kills, in 34 attempts for a .294 attack pct on the week, which included a 45 assist match vs. Austin College. Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlyn Foster of Southwestern led the Pirates in kills with 38, averaging 3.17 per set with a .270 attack percentage. She also added in 44 digs, 3.67 per set. Freshman outside hitter Brette Threadgill of Texas Lutheran finished the weekend with 57 total kills (3.8 kills/set) and a .298 hitting percentage and also added 15 digs and three blocks to her stat line.

 

SCAC CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Games of September 23 – September 29

SOPHIE MERRIFIELD OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a sophomore libero from Fairfax, Calif., and CHANDLER LENTZ OF SOUTHWESTRN UNIVERSITY, a junior libero and defensive specialist from Forney, Texas, have been selected the SCAC Volleyball Co-Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 23 through Sunday, September 29. 

Merrifield collected 95 digs, an average of 5.94 per set, to help Colorado College win three of four matches last weekend in Georgetown, Texas. 

Merrifield set a career high with 36 during the four-set victory over Southwestern, and then came back the following day to scoop up 29 in the 3-1 win over Texas Lutheran. She has recorded more than 20 digs in a match in seven matches this season.

Lentz was sensational for the Pirates this weekend. In four matches, 13 sets, she recorded a team high 78 digs, averaging six per set. She posted 11 assists and two aces while committing just two receiving errors the entire weekend. 

She had a huge game against nationally-ranked Colorado College, tallying 31 digs and no receiving errors and came back to lead her team defensively to three SCAC wins over the weekend.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore defensive specialist Rachel Fusselman of Austin College totaled 81 digs for an average of 4.76 per set and had just six reception errors in four matches last weekend. Junior outside hitter/defensive specialist Brooke Bahlinger of Centenary averaged 3.8 digs per set this weekend for the Ladies. Bahlinger totaled 56 digs for the week for Centenary. Senior libero Jamie Burns of Schreiner had 71 digs and seven service aces for Schreiner with a 32 dig/three service ace performance against Austin College. Junior libero Megan Lee of Texas Lutheran turned in her usual steady performance as the Bulldogs libero over the weekend, finishing with 78 digs (5.20/set) in four matches and also added five service aces and three kills for the Bulldogs. Junior middle blocker Erin Cusenbary of Trinity recorded 12 total blocks for the weekend, averaging 1.00 blocks/set for the Tigers including five blocks and nine kills in the win over nationally-ranked Colorado College, and also finished the weekend with 19 total kills. Dallas did not nominate anyone for the award.
