LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Texas Lutheran University clinched its first football conference title in program history, defeating Austin College 45-12 on Saturday at Matador Stadium in Seguin. The Bulldogs finish league play with a perfect 3-0 mark and now aim for a NCAA at-large berth.

Austin College fell 45-12 at Texas Lutheran on Saturday, with the Bulldogs gaining 391 yards through the air to hand the 'Roos the loss. The 'Roos fall to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the defeat. Texas Lutheran got on the board early with a 66 yard touchdown pass from Brent Peavy to his brother Cameron, but Austin College got a field goal from Andrew Klink to make it 7-3 with 5:31 left in the first. TLU would score once more in the first quarter to take a 14-3 lead, but early in the second Noah Jesko would dive in from a yard out to make it 14-9 after Klink's point after attempt was blocked. However, the Bulldog lead grew to 28-9 after a pair of touchdown runs, and a season long 44 yard field goal from Klink would send the 'Roos into the locker room trailing 28-12. That would be the final score for Austin College as the 'Roos were kept off the scoreboard in the second half, while TLU would add 17 points the rest of the way to make it a 45-12 final. Jesko completed 22-of-46 passes for 242 yards and added a rushing touchdown, while James Nwankpah led the 'Roo rushing attack with 76 yards on 23 carries. Cooper Woodyard caught four passes for 70 yards to lead the Austin College receivers. Brooks Ward made eight tackles, including two for loss to lead the 'Roo defense.
A late rally for Southwestern fell short Saturday as the Pirates dropped a heartbreaker 42-21 to Oklahoma Baptist in non-conference action. Southwestern (0-6) faced an early uphill battle as the Bison raced out to a quick 14-0 lead. Both scores took less than two minutes off the clock as Oklahoma Baptist (1-5) connected on a 57-yard pass from Cale Grauer to Derek Serowski to take the two score lead at the 11:59 mark in the first quarter. Dante Smith hooked up with Matt Gillen who caught a pass in the back of the end zone as Smith's pass was deflected off Taylor Stephens and a Bison defender before landing in Gillen's hands. Smith locked in as he finished with his second three touchdown performance and first 300 yard passing game. The Bison offense continued to pound away with a solid rushing attack that wore down the Pirate defense. As a team OBU finished with 305 yards on the ground. The Pirates will try to rebound next Saturday as they entertain SCAC rival Trinity in a scheduled non-conference matchup. Kickoff from Birkelbach Field is set for 1 p.m.

TLU defeated Southwestern 44-14, Trinity 42-38 and Austin College 45-12. The Bulldogs have scored at least 42 points in all games (all wins) this season. Brent Peavy went over 300 yards passing for the fourth straight time this season. He completed a career-high 15 straight passes to start the game against Austin College. Brent's twin brother, Cameron, went over the 100-yard receiving mark for a third consecutive game. He also has caught at least two TDs in each of the last three games. Redshirt freshman Tyler Figol had a career-best 131 receiving yards against Austin College. Figol caught a six-yard pass from Trenton White in the fourth quarter. Danny Padron inherited a Bulldog Football program that was 6-24 in the three season prior to his arrival. Padron, with the win Saturday over Austin College, is now 17-17 overall in this his fourth season at TLU. Padron is seventh among all-time TLU Football coaches in number of wins. Bulldog quarterbacks are completing 65.09 percent of their passes. Brent Peavy has thrown 17 touchdown passes and only five interceptions in four games. He is averaging 351.75 passing yards and 409.75 yards of total offense per game.

Trinity fell short in a 27-24 loss to Millsaps College on Saturday afternoon, as the Majors kicked a field goal with 12 seconds left to secure the win. The Tigers had their two-game winning streak against the Majors snapped, and fell to 3-3 overall this season. Trinity had a shot at a go-ahead field goal late in the game, but it was blocked, and Millsaps drove down the field for the win on the ensuing possession. Following the field goal, Matthew Kennemer nearly returned the kickoff for a dramatic touchdown, but a shoestring tackle stopped him from breaking free in the middle of the field. The Tigers will now begin a stretch of three road games over the next five weeks to finish off the regular season. Trinity will take on first-year program Southwestern University next weekend, in a non-conference matchup.
