Women's Soccer Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary College got a pair of win over the weekend including a 1-0 win over Louisiana College and a 3-0 win over Wiley College to jet up to second place in the SCAC.

The Austin College women’s soccer team went 1-2 last week with a win over LeTourneau before falling 3-0 to Hendrix and 4-0 to Cal Lutheran, bringing the team’s record to 1-3 to open the season. The ‘Roos exploded for 11 goals in a shutout victory over LeTourneau to get their first win of the season, with Mandi Sherwood scoring a hat trick and Cami Mavelian adding two goals and three assists. Lauren Scott added two goals and an assist, and Abby Saizow, Ashley Rice, Hannah Poenisch, and Franchesca Lozoya each had a tally while Tyler Marquez had two assists and Saizow and Myranda Baumgartner had an assist each. This week the ‘Roos travel to Centenary, Rhodes, and Millsaps.

Centenary women’s soccer team moved to 2-1 on the season after logging wins at Louisiana College and Wiley College over the week. The Centenary women’s soccer Amanda Atwell scored two of the Ladies four goals over the week, including the game-winner against LC. Justine Russell and Kalie Hughes each added goals against Wiley on Sunday. Madison Alexander assisted on two of the four goals of the week with Madeline Stokes providing the other assist. Freshman keeper Erica Coker continues to shine in net garnering both wins in goal. Coker recorded six saves in both shutouts. Centenary returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 as the Ladies open SCAC action against Austin College at 5 p.m.

Dallas women's soccer team went 1-0 on the week, registering a 2-1 win over Concordia University on Saturday afternoon in Irving, Texas. After surrendering a 7th-minute score, the Lady Crusaders pulled even when sophomore forward Rebecca Brunter netted the equalizer in the 46th-minute. Recording four shots on goal, senior defender Emily Rogers provided the game-winning goal in the 66th-minute. Rogers' shot drilled the crossbar and bounced 15 feet in the air, before heading past goalkeeper Megan Frontiera. The win marked head coach Angelina Pane's first of her career. Dallas will host LeTourneau University on Thursday in a 5 p.m. showdown. 

Schreiner women’s soccer went 0-2 on the week.  On Friday, Schreiner traveled to Our Lady of the Lake, where they fell 1-8. Against Howard Payne on Sunday, the Mountaineers were defeated 1-4. This week SU will travel to the University of Houston-Victoria on Saturday, Sept. 14th.

Southwestern had a quiet week of action, hosting Howard Payne University on Friday to kick off a month of home contests. After a quiet first half the Pirates broke the game open in the second frame, scoring three goals on their way to a 3-1 win. Lindsay Jakszta scored one and assisted on another to lead the way for the Pirates. Southwestern moves to 1-2 on the season with the win and have a huge week of action this week, hosting UMHB on Tuesday, UT-Dallas on Friday and UT-Tyler on Sunday.  


Texas Lutheran women's soccer got goals from five different players and claimed its first win of the season after a convincing 7-0 win over LeTourneau on Friday evening. Bulldogs’ Sioned Kirkpatrick helped break open the floodgates with a hat trick on the day, scoring three goals during the offensive outburst. Courtney Farmer, Vanessa Espinoza, Maegan Idrogo and Taylor Vatuna each added a goal of their own. The Bulldogs dominated the entire game, holding LeTourneau to zero shots while tallying 29 themselves. On the road Saturday, despite eight saves from goalkeeper Erin Rose, a second half goal spelled defeat for the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team as it lost 1-0 to Texas Tyler. As a team, Texas Lutheran was outshot 29-5 on the day. Two of those five shots were on goal. Vanessa Espinoza gave the Bulldogs good minutes off the bench, leading the team with two shots, including one on goal.

No. 6 Trinity finished its first road weekend of the season with a 1-0-1 record, tying Claremont 1-1 on Friday night, then earning a 2-0 shutout victory over Chapman on Sunday. After allowing a goal in the opening moments of the second half against Claremont, Trinity’s Endaisia Love tied the game in the 81st minute to force the draw.  Against Chapman, the Tigers got a pair of second-half goals, and the defense posted its first shutout of the year. Trinity returns home this weekend, hosting     UT-Tyler on Friday and UT-Dallas on Sunday.  Last season, the Tigers earned a 1-0 win at UT-Tyler and a 3-0 shutout of UT-Dallas on the road.
