Men's Basketball Recap (Week 12) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - With one weekend of conference play remaining, not a single team in SCAC men's basketball has clinched. Colorado College and Schreiner were the big winners last week, both going 2-0 with the Mountaineers defeating Trinity and the Tigers defeating Centenary.

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College split its two games last weekend, falling 69-60 to Colorado College before topping Dallas 76-71 behind a career performance from Brian Baehl. Baehl scored 23 points, including four in a row late in the game to give the ‘Roos the lead for good, and added six rebounds and four assists. For the weekend, he averaged 13.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Ransom Okpala led the team with an average of 15.5 points over the weekend, hitting 6-of-14 three pointers in the two games. Alan Sullivan chipped in 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and Jeremy Swisher shot 53.8% from the field to average 11.0 points in the two games. The ‘Roos wrap up the regular season this weekend when they host

Centenary on Friday and UC Santa Cruz on Sunday. Centenary witnessed its season-long and SCAC-best, seven game win streak snapped on Saturday evening as the Gents went 1-1 on the week with a win over Dallas and a loss to Colorado College. The Gents sit in a three-way tie after the weekend slate with Colorado College and Schreiner heading into the final weekend of the regular season. Caden Cheramie and Jonathan Blount paced the Maroon and White over the weekend averaging 20-plus points each. Blount averaged 25 points with Cheramie sitting right on the mark of 20 points per game. Blount was 60 percent from the field during the course of the two games and 30 percent from behind the arc. Cheramie shot just shy of 58 percent from the floor and recorded a clip of 55.6 from long range. Both players were over 80 percent from the charity stripe. Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 as they close out the home slate against Open Bible College. The Gents final SCAC game of the regular season is at Austin College on Friday, Feb. 21.

Colorado College climbed into a three-way tie for second place with a pair of road victories last week. Chris Lesnansky scored seven of his game-high 22 points during a 10-0 run midway through the second half to help the Tigers pull away for a 69-60 victory at Austin on Friday night. Lesnansky ignited the pivotal run just after the ’Roos tied the score at 40-40 with 13:34 to play. Ryan Milne hit a pair of three-pointers during an 8-2 surge that gave CC its biggest lead at 58-44 with 4:17 left. Austin cut its deficit to eight points six times during the final three minutes, but Colorado College sank nine of 11 free throws to seal the victory. Mitch Carter went 4-for-4 from the floor en route to an 11-point performance, while James Lonergan grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. CC overcame an 11-point second-half deficit on Saturday to defeat Centenary, 77-70, on Saturday. The Gents built a 41-30 lead early the second half, but Lesnansky recorded eight of his game-high 23 points during a 14-2 run that gave the Tigers their first lead at 44-43 on a Justin Berardino layup with 12:16 to play. After Centenary tied the game at 50-50, Colorado College answered with a 13-3 surge to grab a 10-point advantage on a Russell Clark dunk with 4:41 to go. The Tigers hit 14 of 16 free throws during the final 2:26 to close out its fifth conference victory on the road this season. Clark finished with a career-high 21 points, sinking nine of 12 shots from the floor and three of five free throws. CC’s 16 victories equals the most in a single season under head coach Andy Partee and the most since the 1992-93 squad posted a 17-8 record. Colorado College plays host to the University of Dallas on Saturday in its final home game of the season. 

Dallas went 0-2 on the week in a pair of conference road contests. On Friday, in Shreveport, La., the Crusaders fell 77-76 to Centenary. On Saturday, in Sherman, Texas, they navy and white were bested 76-71 by Austin College. In their final SCAC regular-season game of the 2013-14 season, Dallas faces Colorado College in a 12 p.m. MST tip-off on Saturday in Colorado Springs. Head coach Jarred Samples’ squad celebrates senior day (Ross Davidson, Nate Wilson) on Monday, Feb. 28, with a 7 p.m. start versus the University of California-Santa Cruz.

Schreiner
went 2-0 with a home victories over Southwestern (70-57) and SCAC leader Trinity (62-61) this past weekend. Twenty-four games into the regular season, Schreiner is being led by Senior AJ Myres, who is second in the SCAC in scoring with a 19 ppg average and Junior Stevan Guerrero, who leads the ‘Neers with 6 rebounds per game average, along with a 14.3 ppg. SU will play host  this week to Texas Lutheran (Saturday, Feb. 22nd).

Southwestern dropped both games on the road this weekend and fall into last place in the SCAC after the losses. Southwestern posted an eight point comeback in two and a half minutes to pull within two late in the second  but ultimately fell 97-94 on Friday night to Austin College. Southwestern led by double digits in the first half against Centenary but couldn’t hold onto the lead as Centenary got hot in the second half to defeat SU 71-57 on Saturday night. Now 6-15 on the year and 3-8 in the SCAC, the Pirates head out on their final road trip of the regular season, facing Schreiner and Texas Lutheran this weekend. 

Texas Lutheran couldn’t dig itself out of an early 23-8 hole, eventually falling 70-54 at home to Trinity on Friday night. After falling behind early, the Bulldogs were able to play first-place Trinity to a virtual tie the rest of the way and even managed to close a 20-point deficit to as small as five in the second half. After falling behind by as many as 22 in the first half, the Bulldogs used a 20-8 run beginning at the end of the first half and eventually cut the Trinity lead to 47-42 with 11:27 to go in the game. The Bulldogs were led by Garrett Wilkins (Austin, Texas) and his 21 points, marking the second straight game he’s led the team in scoring. He shot 8-of-16 from the field and 4-of-7 from behind the arc to go along with three rebounds and three assists. The Bulldogs battled back from an 11-point second-half deficit against Southwestern on Saturday, eventually getting to within three with under a minute to play, but they couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 74-69. The Bulldogs cut an 11-point deficit to just three with 45 seconds to play after a Joshua Alderman layup. The defense got the stop it needed afterwards, forcing a Southwestern turnover with 31 seconds left. With the shot clock turned off and trailing by three, the Bulldogs got an open 3-pointer for Garrett Wilkins, but the shot hit off the front rim. Texas Lutheran shot 39.3 percent from the field for the game, including 34.6 percent shooting in the second half. The Bulldogs struggled from outside, making 2-of-10 from behind the arc and going 0-of-6 in the second half.

Trinity went 1-1 over another SCAC weekend on the road, beating Texas Lutheran 70-54, but falling in a narrow 62-61 loss at Schreiner on Saturday night. The Tigers are 15-9 overall and 10-3 in SCAC play, holding a one-game advantage over three teams tied for second place in the standings. Robert Kitzinger needs just six points to move into the top 10 in career scoring at Trinity, and is 63 points from becoming the sixth Tiger player ever to reach 1,400 in a career.  He is also six three-point field goals from tying Rich Skeen’s all-time record of 225, set from 1990-94. Trinity will travel to Southwestern University on Friday night, playing in the final game of the regular season.  The Tigers host the SCAC Tournament, beginning February 28.
