Women's Soccer Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Schreiner University picked up its first win of the 2013 season with a 2-1 overtime victory over SCAC foe Centenary College on Sunday. Meanwhile, Trinity University picked up two more conference victories to remain undefeated and atop the league standings.

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College continued its hot streak, going 1-0-1 to bring the 'Roos record to 3-0-1 over their past four games, and 5-8-1 overall on the year. The ‘Roos opened the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Schreiner before tying Texas Lutheran 1-1 on Sunday. Against Schreiner, the ‘Roos fell behind less than three minutes in but scored three unanswered to finish the game. Mandi Sherwood, Tyler Marquez and Abby Saizow scored for the ‘Roos, with Cami Mavelian earning an assist. In a 1-1 double overtime draw with Texas Lutheran, the ‘Roos got a goal from Lauren Scott on an assist from Sherwood seven minutes in and held on to earn the tie. Emily Brockette made six saves in the goal for Austin College.

Centenary fell 2-1 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Schreiner to drop two SCAC contests during the week. The Ladies also dropped an 8-1 at Texas Lutheran. Carly Slovensky added her team-leading, sixth goal of the season in the OT loss at SU while Laurie Priftis recorded her first goal of the season in the decision at TLU. Erica Coker and Lauren Cullen each saw action in goal for the Maroon and White with each being saddled with a loss for the weekend.

University of Dallas (5-9, 3-5 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in conference competition. With both games on the road, the Lady Crusaders fell 7-1 to Trinity on Friday in San Antonio. On Sunday, in Georgetown, head coach Angelina Pane’s crew fell 5-1 to Southwestern. This week, Dallas will play two home SCAC games -- Texas Lutheran (Friday, 2 p.m.); Schreiner (Sunday, 1 p.m.).

Schreiner was 1-1 on the week - with both matches being in conference. On Friday, Schreiner lost to Austin College 3-1. On Sunday, Schreiner recorded their first SCAC win over Centenary College 2-1 in overtime. This weekend the Mountaineers will travel to University of Dallas (Sunday, Oct. 20th).

Southwestern went 1-1 in SCAC conference action this week and remains in second place in the conference. Tuesday, Southwestern squared off against Trinity and put up a strong showing, but ultimately fell 3-0 in the match. On Sunday, SU used a huge second half to secure the win over the University of Dallas 5-1. Southwestern improves to 6-7 on the year and 4-2 in the SCAC after the week. They return to action at Austin College on Friday and Centenary on Sunday.

Texas Lutheran broke open a 2-1 advantage early in the second half with six goals over the final 25:30 in an 8-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Centenary (La.). TLU sophomore Sinead Kirkpatrick scored her 11th, 12th and 13th goals of the season. Texas Lutheran battled back from an early deficit and managed to play Austin College to a 1-1 draw on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Gustafson Field. Jaqueline Beck played the hero the Bulldogs on Sunday after picking a great time to score her first collegiate goal. The freshman midfielder scored the equalizer in the 74th minute off a corner kick taken by Courtney Farmer. Farmer’s service into the box took a bounce off a body and landed at the feet of Beck, who ripped a shot to the top corner to pull the Bulldogs to equal footing.

No. 4 Trinity improved its winning streak to 10 games with a pair of SCAC victories over the past week, defeating both Southwestern and Dallas at home. The Tigers blanked Southwestern 3-0 to open the week on Tuesday, then finished with a 7-1 win on Friday against Dallas. Michelle Lanier and Emily Jorgens scored game-winners for the Tigers. Trinity will close out its regular season home schedule on Monday night, hosting Our Lady of the Lake University at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers then will travel to Centenary and Austin College over the weekend, continuing SCAC play.
