INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA Division III
Men's Tennis Committee selected Trinity sophomore Paxton Deuel as
one of 32 men's singles players for the 2014 NCAA Division III
Women's Tennis Championships. Additionally, senior Greg Haugen was
named as an alternate in singles play while Deuel and senior
Nicolas Moreno were selected as alternates for doubles play.
The individual championships will consist of 32 singles players
and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for
the championships are based on win-loss record, strength of
schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
The team championship will take place May 19-21, and the
individual championships will be played May 22-24.
Both championships will be held at the Biszantz Family Tennis
Center in Claremont, Calif. The championships will be hosted by
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Deuel became the seventh Trinity player in a row to win SCAC
Player of the Year. While earning the top award in the conference,
Deuel also took home the SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Last fall,
Deuel won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region
Singles Championship. He advanced to the ITA National Small College
Championships and completed the prestigious event with a
fifth-place finish.
After an opening win, Deuel fell to Abishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon, 7-5, 6-3 before returning to defaet the Top Seed of Championships, Eric Halperm of Emory, 7-5, 6-3. Deuel locked up fifth place with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Luke Trinka of Bowdoin.
Alla, the National Small College Champion of the fall, and Halpern will both be in the upcoming Division III Championships.
As the No. 1 singles player for the Tigers, Deuel has chalked up a 15-6 record, and is ranked No. 2 in the West Region. Deuel also plays No. 1 doubles with Moreno. The pair, selected as alternates in doubles competition, is 16-10 on the season including 11 straight victories to finish the year.
Haugen, an alternate in individual action, compiled a record of
15-8 on the season including a 6-4 record at No. 2 singles, an 8-4
record at No. 3 singles, and a 1-0 record at No. 1
