LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Centenary, Dallas, Texas Lutheran, and Trinity all picked up wins this past week as seven of the eight SCAC schools all competed in one game. Also, Colorado College earned a Top 25 ranking for the first time in school history.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College was idle
on the weekend. They will take on Elmhurst and Hendrix at home on
December 18th and 19th before traveling to Memphis for the Rhodes
College Tournament.
Jonathan Blount surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau as the
Centenary men’s basketball team improved to
4-1 on the season following a 93-73 victory over Open Bible College
on Saturday evening. Blount, who exceeded the career benchmark
early in the second half on a three-pointer, finished the night
with 18 points. The Shreveport, La., native now has 1,004 points in
his career and is the 31st Gent to reach the feat. The 93 points is
the most since Jan. 16, 2012 when the Gents scored 95 in a win over
East Texas Baptist in the Gold Dome. Newcomers Kendall Demouchet
and James Sapp tallied double-doubles. Demouchet paced the Maroon
and White with 19 points as Sapp tallied 16 points to lead a bench
that scored 42 points on the night. The duo each grabbed 12
rebounds to tie for the top spot on the team. Centenary, which
scored 26 points off turnovers, took advantage of the inside the
entire contest recording 48 points in the paint. The Gents shot
49.2-percent from the field in the contest - marking the third
outing of 49 percent or higher from the floor and the fourth over
40 percent this season. Centenary also connected on 27 of 36 (75
percent) shots from the charity stripe the fourth time on the
campaign they have shot 75 percent or higher. Centenary returns to
action on Tuesday, Dec. 17 as the Gents travel to the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette. Tip is slated for 7 p.m
Despite a game-high 27 points from senior guard Ryan Milne,
No. 25 Colorado College suffered its first loss of
the season at the University of Northern Colorado on Tuesday night.
The Division I Bears shot 59-percent from the floor and used a
46-22 advantage on the glass to defeat the Tigers, 96-57. Milne
became the second player in program history to eclipse the
1,200-point plateau and finished the game with 1,216. After he
scored on a driving layup to pull CC to within 11-9 just 5:22 into
the game, Northern Colorado outscored CC, 43-20, the rest of the
first half to take a 25-point lead into intermission. Junior
forward Chris Lesnansky added 15 points for the Tigers and climbed
four spots on the program’s all-time scoring list and
currently ranks No. 27 with 795 points. Sophomore guard Justin
Berardino added five points and grabbed a team-high four rebounds.
Colorado College is idle until Dec. 28 when it visits Lehman
College in New York City. The Tigers will also play at Babson
College on Dec. 30 during its two-game trip to the East
Coast.
The Dallas men’s basketball team went 1-0
on the week. On Wednesday, in Keene, Texas, the Crusaders won 86-66
over Southwestern Adventist University. In a game of runs, head
coach Jarred Samples’ squad boasted a game-high 27-point lead
with 2:43 remaining in the contest, before capturing a 20-point
victory. Dallas faces MacMurray College on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 3
p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.
Schreiner went 0-1 this
week with a 67-79 home loss to NCAA II Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Eight games into the regular season, Schreiner is being led
by senior AJ Myres, who is second in the SCAC in scoring with a
20.9 ppg average and junior Stevan Guerrero, who leads the
‘Neers with 5.5 rebounds per game average, along with a 17.6
ppg. SU will host Concordia-Texas this Saturday, December
21st in Edington Gymnasium. .
Southwestern traveled to Washington to take on
Whitman on Saturday night. Two long scoring droughts doomed the
Pirates as Whitman extended their lead to 21 points eight minutes
into the second half. Chase Kocher led all scorers with 21 points
on 4-6 shooting from the field and 12-15 from the free throw line.
Southwestern falls to 3-4 on the year after the loss and have one
more game in Washington, facing Whitworth on Monday
evening.
Jordan Kouremetis scored a career-high 18 points and Robert Watson
Jr. chipped in with a double-double on Tuesday night in an 81-66
home win for the Texas Lutheran men’s
basketball team over Open Bible College. The Bulldogs, behind
Kouremetis’s career night, battled back from an early
10-point deficit and outscored the Bruins 69-44 the rest of the
way, stretching their winning streak to four games and improving
their record to 5-2 on the year. The four-game winning streak is
the Bulldogs’ longest since winning four in a row during the
2011-12 campaign.
Trinity won its only game last week, defeating
the University of Texas-Dallas 63-58 to improve its overall record
to 5-5 on the season. The Tigers have won three of their last
four games, after opening the season with a 2-4 record. Trinity
will not play again until December 29-30, as the Tigers host the
Trinity Christmas Classic. Trinity faces off against Loras
College on Sunday, December 29, then finishes the tournament with a
game against Pomona-Pitzer on Monday.
