AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College women's soccer team earned a pair of shutout victories over the weekend, topping both Schreiner and Texas Lutheran by scores of 1-0. The 'Roos got a goal from Abby Saizow in the 39th minute to top Schreiner and Franchesca Lozoya made three saves to keep the clean sheet. The 'Roos held a 20-8 shot advantage in the game. On Sunday the 'Roos handed TLU just their second SCAC loss of the season when Cami Mavelian found the back of the net off of a corner kick by Mandi Sherwood just 1:37 into the game. That would prove to be the only goal the 'Roos would need as Lozoya again earned the shutout while making six saves. This weekend the 'Roos head on the road to once again square off against Schreiner and TLU.

Centenary claimed a 2-0 win on Sunday to force a 1-1 record on the week. Carly Slovensky posted both goals in the decision over Schreiner – marking her second, multi-goal contest of the season. Slovensky led the team with seven shots on the week. Erica Coker got the decision in both outings this week. The freshman totaled 12 saves in the win over Schreiner – marking her fourth double-digit, save performance of the season. Coker finished with 19 saves for the week. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11 at Texas Lutheran.

The University of Dallas women's soccer team (5-7, 3-3 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in conference competition. On Friday in Irving, Texas, the Lady Crusaders fell 3-0 to Trinity. On Sunday, head coach Angelina Pane's bunch was defeated 2-0 by Southwestern. On the slate this week for Dallas are two conference road games -- Trinity on Friday and Southwestern on Sunday.

The Schreiner Mountaineers went 0-2 on the week. On Friday, the team traveled to Austin College, and fell 1-0. At Centenary on Sunday, the Mountaineers fell, 2-0.  This week Schreiner will host Austin College on Friday and Centenary on Sunday.

Southwestern seized a win over the weekend to improve to 4-1 in the SCAC and 5-6 overall. As they have done most of the year, the Pirates turned up the heat in the second half and got two goals while defense shutout the Crusaders to win 2-0. Sarah Bevins and Lindsay Jakszta posted goals in the win while Mariah Escajeda got the shutout victory. Southwestern faces conference rival Trinity on Tuesday before opening the second half of the conference season this weekend, hosting Dallas on Sunday at noon.

Sioned Kirkpatrick scored twice and added an assist to help the Texas Lutheran women's soccer squad shut out Centenary 4-0 on Friday night. Kirkpatrick (San Antonio, Texas) didn't waste much time putting her team ahead, scoring in just the fifth minute off an assist from Claudia Trevino (San Antonio, Texas). Kirkpatrick, a sophomore, would make it 2-0 just minutes later, scoring her team-leading 10th goal in the eighth minute. Once again, the assist came from Trevino. The two assists were the freshman's third and fourth of the season. In the 15th minute, Trevino and Kirkpatrick switched roles, with Trevino scoring her first career goal off a Kirkpatrick assist. It was Kirkpatrick's team-leading fifth assist of the year. The Bulldogs would cap off a great first half with a late goal by Taylor Vatuna (Cypress, Texas) in the 43rd minute to go into the locker room up 4-0. Against Austin College, a goal in the second minute by the 'Roos was the only scoring of the game as the Bulldogs fell 1-0 on the road. After the very early goal, the Bulldogs were able to regroup and played Austin College even the rest of the way. They were just never able to find the equalizer despite getting 12 shots and six on goal.

No. 4 Trinity recorded its seventh shutout in the last eight games on Friday afternoon, handing the University of Dallas a 3-0 defeat in SCAC play. Emily Jorgens picked up her fourth game-winner of the season, while Shelby Hopkins and Shelby Guenthardt finished off the scoring for the Tigers.  For Guenthardt, it marked her 43rd career goal, which puts her just four goals from tying for fourth all-time at Trinity. The Tigers will play twice this week, starting with a Tuesday night game against Southwestern University.  Trinity scored a pair of shutout wins over the Pirates last season.  Friday night will be a rematch against Dallas.  The Tigers have recorded two straight shutouts against the Crusaders, including last year's 1-0 win in the SCAC Championship match.
