LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The SCAC will be well
represented at the 2014 NCAA Division III National Swimming and
Diving Championship Meet which begins March 19th at the IU
Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Complete Men's Listing | Complete Women's Listing
On the men's side, 2014 SCAC Swimmer of the Meet Stephen Culberson
of Trinity University will compete in at least two individual
events. The junior will swim in both the 50 free and 100 free. On
the unofficial psych sheet listing, Culberson has the third-best 50
free qualifying time (20.25) and second-best 100 free qualifying
time (44.62).
The Tigers will also be represented in at least two relay events
at nationals: the 200 and 400 free relays. The 200 free relay team
of Culberson, freshman Isaac Johnson, junior Kevin Thomas and
junior Adam Thomas posted a qualifying time of 1:21.64 and the 400
relay team of Culberson, Johnson, sophomore Jon Hoffman, and A.
Thomas qualified with a time of 3:03.22
On the diving boards, junior Austin Howlett of Colorado
College, hindered by an injury at the SCAC championships three
weeks ago, bounced back at regionals this past weekend to earn his
second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III national meet.
Howlett, who earned All-America honors by finishing eighth in the
3-meter competition at nationals a year ago, earned a repeat trip
by claiming second place in the 1-meter event at Saturday's
regional meet hosted by Grinnell College.
On the women's side, Colorado College and Trinty will each send
one swimmer to the national meet.
Colorado College junior Olivia Dilarti was invited to NCAAs in the
100-yard butterfly after posting an all-time CC best of 56.46
seconds at the league meet three weeks ago.
Trinity will send sophomore sensation and reigning SCAC
Swimmer-of-the-Meet, Kara Beauchamp. Beauchamp has qualified in
both the 200 and 400 IM, with times of 2:06.27 and 4:27.40,
respectively.
It should be noted, on both the men's and women's side, if an
individual qualifies for an event at nationals, he or she can swim
in two other individual events of their choosing, as long as they
do not exceed the maximum of seven events.
As has been the case the last several years, Trinity will send a
strong female diving contingent to the national meet. Senior Katie
Sheldon and sophomore Ashley Heline captured the top two positions
of the 3-meter board this past Saturday at the NCAA Division III
Regional Meet at Grinnell College.
As a result of the regional event, both will compete on the
1-meter and 3-meter boards. Each has earned All-America honors at
the national meet.
Sheldon picked up a guaranteed trip to nationals on Friday by
finishing second in the 1-meter competition, and Heline placed
third. According to NCAA rules, a diver is eligible to compete in
both diving championships, if there is a qualification in one
event.
