AROUND THE SCAC 

Centenary ended its second season at Southwestern University in a 24-0 loss. The Gents fall to 0-10 and 0-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Maroon and White took seven shots placing two on cage. Alex Vandruff led the squad with three shots. Matthew Ferrell was second with two shots and one on goal. The Gents went 9-for-18 in clears on the day and Southwestern went 13-for-14. Max Beilke led the Gents in ground balls with five. Bastien Hay (0-9) took the loss despite recording 10 saves between the pipes.

Colorado College saw its 16-game home winning streak snapped with a 7-5 loss to Division II Colorado Mesa University in a defensive battle on Saturday. The Tigers finished with a 48-33 advantage in total shots, but were unable to solve goaltender Brad Bradenburg who finished with 21 saves. Seniors Tyler Allen and Jack Kreitler scored 18 seconds apart to give CC a 2-1 lead with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter, but Jake Douglas tied the score at 2-2 when he found the net with 20 ticks remaining in the opening frame. The Mavericks built a 7-3 lead with 9:28 remaining in the fourth quarter before Colorado College narrowed the gap on markers by Allen and first-year attackman Austin Davie to close out the scoring. Sophomore goaltender Chase Murphy finished with 10 saves, marking the sixth time this season he stopped double-digit shots, while second-year defender Tim Jenkins grabbed five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. CC finished with a 29-10 edge in ground balls and won 11 of 15 faceoffs. The Tigers split its two games against DII opponents this season. Colorado College travels to Georgetown, Texas, on Saturday to face host Southwestern in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship game. The Tigers are 9-0 all-time against SU, but only one of those encounters took place at Southwestern. In two previous SCAC tournament matchups, Colorado College defeated the Pirates 10-4 in a semifinal contest in 2011 and 24-2 in the 2013 championship game. 


Southwestern men’s lacrosse team tied the record for most goals in a game and end the regular season with their best record ever, 10-4. Southwestern was relatively slow to start, scoring just five goals in the first quarter, but busted the game open in the second with 10 goals to lead 15-0 at halftime. The Pirates continued to roll in the second half and scored seven goals in the third quarter before working the clock and scoring two goals in the fourth to arrive at the 24-0 record tying final.Downing led with five goals and two assists on eight shots while Fox added in four goals and two assists. Jackson Timian led with four assists and six ground balls on the afternoon. Southwestern looks to set another record on April 26th as they vie for the SCAC Conference Championship at home against Colorado College at 1 p.m.
